Learning to be A Doctor

Back in October Gracie was admitted to the hospital you can read it about it here. That really scared her. So with that  being said I decided to get her as familiar with all the medical equipment that she will ever encounter in her lifetime and then some. We took the opportunity to go to the teddy bear clinic at our local hospital where she learned about all the equipment that is used in surgeries. You can read about her and her friend’s Matti’s experience here. I love the fact our local hospital has these types of programs to alleviate children’s fear of doctors and hospitals. Gracie is no stranger to doctors and tests. When she was in my womb it was discovered that she has one kidney smaller than the other so she has to be followed very carefully to make sure that both kidneys are functioning at their peak. That combined with her ongoing battle with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and ongoing chronic headaches you can imagine that she is sick of doctor’s right now. At one point she would see a Doctor and start crying it was that bad. And our pediatrician is such a sweetheart. She still does not like shots but will tolerate them because of all she learned at the teddy bear clinic. She might not be a champion prize fighter when it comes to doctors and her fears but she is slowly winning the battle one tiny step at a time. Check around your community to see if your hospital offers something like that to help your child with their fears.
