Sometimes You Just Get in a Funk (And That’s Okay, Y’all)

Hey y’all,

Let’s be real for a second — sometimes life just feels… off. You’re not necessarily sad or overwhelmed. You just feel stuck. Unmotivated. Drifting. Like you’re watching your life from the sidelines instead of playing full out on the field.

That, my friend, is what I call a funk. And guess what?
We all get in them. Even those of us who usually sparkle like sweet tea on a summer day.

Whether it’s the change of seasons, burnout from doing too much, or just one of those inexplicable emotional speed bumps, funks happen. I’ve been there — recently, in fact. I was staring at my to-do list, podcast episodes to record, blog drafts waiting to be written, and I just… couldn’t. My mind and my heart were somewhere else, and no amount of coffee or planner stickers could pull me out of it.

But here’s the thing I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way):
You don’t have to force your way out of a funk.

Give Yourself Permission to Pause

So often we try to hustle through the heaviness, thinking productivity will be the cure. But sometimes the best thing you can do is just be still. Take a nap. Journal. Sit outside and watch the breeze dance through the trees. You don’t have to earn rest, friend. You’re already worthy of it.

Name It, Don’t Shame It

One of the most powerful things I’ve started doing is simply naming what I’m feeling.
“This is a funk. It’s not forever. It’s just where I am right now.”
Saying that out loud (or writing it down) takes the power away from those murky feelings. Suddenly, they’re not so scary anymore. They’re just part of the journey.

Little Joys Bring Big Shifts

When I’m in a funk, I go back to basics. I light my favorite candle, cuddle up with Allie and Gigi (my sweet fur babies), and play music that reminds me of who I am when I’m at my best. I take a walk, not to exercise, but to breathe. I make something — a craft, a mess, or a big ol’ sandwich. Anything that stirs up the part of me that still knows joy is hiding underneath the funk.

You’re Not Broken — You’re Becoming

Sometimes a funk is just your soul’s way of whispering, “Hey, we need to slow down.” Other times, it’s the quiet before a big personal breakthrough. Either way, you are not broken. You’re evolving. You’re healing. You’re human.

So if you find yourself in a funk right now, let this be your permission slip to feel it, rest through it, and know you’re not alone. I see you. I am you.

And when the fog lifts (because it will), you’ll step back into your light — maybe even brighter than before.

With love from the Blog Cabin,
Melissa
