Having responsibilities is a natural part of life and when you become an adult there are so many responsibilities that are laid in your hands and at your feet. Just this week alone, I have had to battle things I never would have thought of battling. So when faced with the tough decisions and change you cling to the ordinary and mundane things of life. Sure they aren’t that exciting but still, it helps you get through the day. But being able to embrace those tasks requires some creativity and a lot of time being thankful and looking for gratitude where you wouldn’t look for it. That is why it is important to keep finding joy in the mundane. It is a great way to get those chores done and also to be thankful that you still have your whole family around you.

Taking care of a home and family is an important role. Being a mom, I  am committed to maintaining an environment where my family feels safe and comfortable. Creating that means taking care of chores that are ordinarily unenjoyable. Chores such as laundry, taking out the trash, and cleaning the garbage disposal.

I see doing these household chores as benefitting my family members.. When the house is clean, we are able to enjoy it and when company comes over I am not worried about whether the trash smells if my sink is full of dirty dishes, and what is that smell coming out of the garbage disposal.

My family’s well-being is enough motivation for me to get those chores down. Although I wish there was some magic easy button that I could press and the house would be clean automatically. Keeping them in mind while doing them puts a smile on my face. I am happy to be able to do something beneficial for them.

Cleaning the kitchen is time-consuming, but I make time for it and even make it fun. I normally get Gracie, the youngest daughter and the only one at home to help me out and we can get it done in no time. We each take separate parts of the kitchen and get to work cleaning. I normally handle the appliances meaning the cooktop and sink and disposal while she clears off the counters. Folks, I don’t know if your kitchen counters are like mine, they seem to be the drop zone for everything that comes in my house – well that and my washer and dryer, because they are right by my back door. During our cleaning, Gracie and I either have some meaningful conversations or we crank up Spotify and have our own song and dance party.  I love this because it makes the tasks at hand go by faster.  Chores are synonymous with memorable moments.

Doing mundane chores allows me to concentrate on something that produces desired results, in other words, gives me some control over something in my life when the rest of my life is spiraling out of control. . Committing my time to those things is fulfilling.

I feel a sense of accomplishment when at the end of the I can look back and see all that I was able to do despite what else is going on in my life.   Today, chore time is valuable time for me because of the results that they produce. I am happy to work on anything that makes those around me feel good. So for now I chose to look for and to continue finding joy in the mundane.

  1. Finding joy in those things is good for you. This looks like something that would help me with my garbage disposal. You are right there are odors and I always wanted something that made it easy to clean. This is a trusted brand and I will look for these next time I am at the store. Thank you!
