Best Sustainable DIY Project Ideas

Recently, I’ve been examining different ways I can alter my lifestyle to live more sustainably. Although eco-friendly alternatives and products can sometimes be more costly, I’ve found plenty of simple, sustainable DIY project ideas anyone can add to their home. To learn more about how you go green without large expenses, keeping reading!

Craft Your Own Reusable Tote Bag

Even though I save my plastic bags from the grocery store to be reused, collecting piles of these plastic materials can still feel so shameful. If y’all are like me and want to cut down on the amount of paper and plastic collected in your house, I recommend DIY crafting a reusable tote bag.

Since these fabric-made bags are readily reusable, you won’t have to feel the dreaded guilt or shame from collecting empty paper and plastic bags ever again.

How to make a tote bag

  1. Cut two pieces of fabric into two rectangles (choose the desired size)
  2. Cut a 2×2 square from the bottom corners of your fabric
  3. Add your interfacing fabric to the opposite sides of your rectangles and pin these materials together
  4. Pinch the gaps between the cut corners together and pin a ½ inch seam.
  5. Sew the outside perimeter and corners together
  6. Flip your bag inside out: interfacing material should be inside your bag, and the outer fabric should be on the outside
  7. Iron away wrinkles
  8. Enjoy your reusable tote bag!

Reusable Paper Towels

I hate buying paper towels. Paper towels can easily hike up your grocery bill, and they’re only good for one use! If y’all also have a vendetta against these materials, try DIY stitching together your own reusable paper towels.

This craft is one of the many projects you can make with fabric scraps. Simply collect excess scraps of fabric from other crafting projects and sew the fabrics together into one rectangle paper towel. Once you’ve finished, you can reuse this material over and over and never waste money on paper towels again.

Crocheted Dish Cloths

One of the best sustainable DIY projects I’ve ever made is my personalized dishcloths. These dishcloths will revolutionize the way you clean dishes. This DIY project will also save you the cost and waste of buying sponges.

You can make these dishcloths from yarn or more fabric scraps. If y’all prefer to crotchet, I recommend using leftover yarn for this project.

If you prefer to use the rest of your excess fabric scraps, you can also stitch together patches of fabric. Once y’all finish crafting, you’ll have a reusable dishcloth that’s easy to clean and highly useful for your home.

When I craft my own DIY projects, my home feels more personal. If you’re looking for new ways to make your home cozier and want to live a greener lifestyle, try out these sustainable DIY projects.
