Visiting The Past
One of my favorite things to do is tour historic sites. I love to learn how the generations before of us lived and realize how fortunate we are. Recently in our travels, we visited a old historic cemetery. I went with my friend Courtney on my birthday and I loved it so much that I wanted to share it with my family.
First the cemetery is beautiful it is called The Old Burying Ground. It has just a unique feel to it when you walk in. There is a story behind each stone. Unfortunately there were some stones that could not be read but the ones that could be read were amazing.
Like the marker that was placed for 4 infant sons of the same couple who died with years of each other that one was so sad. Makes me feel happy that we have the medical advances that we have now. Then there is the story of the sisters who married the same man not at the same time but after the other one had died.
Of course any visit to the cemetery would not be complete without the story of the girl buried in a rum keg. The story goes that she begged her parents to let her go back to visit England. You see her dad was going a business trip. The mom agreed but made the dad promise to bring her daughter back. Sadly the girl took ill and died on the voyage home. The custom during this time was to throw the body overboard, but the dad remembering the promise he made to his wife bought a keg full of rum and placed his daughter’s body inside. Her grave is probably the most visited in the cemetery. Little children bring her gifts when they visit.
There are so many other stories in this wonderful old historic cemetery. I was a little disappointed that I did not find more unusual names but I did find one I fell in love with Zilphia Ann.
Check out the pictures I snapped on my two trips here. It was so beautiful and scenic. If you are ever in the Beaufort area make sure to visit this beautiful piece of history.
These are some of the graves. But the scenery at this cemetery is just beautiful.
