These are a Few of My Favorite Christmas Things
This is a partnership between Shinesty and Adventures of Frugal Mom.
As I sit here and write the night before Christmas, I can’t help but reflect on Christmases of the past, and how different Christmases are now and they are ever-changing. So with that said, I would like to reflect on memories of Christmases from long ago. And also tell you about new traditions we have had to make due to family, location, and basically life.
Favorite Christmas Memory
My favorite memory is actually the last Christmas we had in my dad. He was in hospice care, and we went to visit him. We all took our presents to him and one gift to open from my mom and dad. As we were opening the gifts, he wanted to know what Allie, (you know our spoiled Shih Tzu) got for Christmas. Then he admitted that Allie was his favorite grandchild. I am so glad that I have that happy memory of him. Shortly after that day, he had to be sedated, and he passed away.
Favorite Christmas Tradition
Going to my parents’ house Christmas morning, my dad would call us at the crack of dawn and ask us when we were coming over. Once we got there, my dad would pass out presents making jokes to make us all laugh. After the gifts, my mom would make us a big Christmas breakfast. After my dad died, we continued that tradition until this year. We were uninvited to Christmas breakfast because, as usual, my sister got her way. So this is going to force us to create a new tradition in our house.
Favorite Christmas Movie
I have two favorite movies. But for this one, it is okay to have two. Why because one is a cartoon and one is an actual movie. My favorite cartoon is Frosty the Snowman. It didn’t use to be. It was actually used to be my sister Karen’s favorite movie. She loved it because there was a little girl named Karen in it. After she died, I decided to create some time for me during the holidays, so I steal away and watch Frosty in her memory.
My second favorite movie is White Christmas with Bing Crosby. I can remember, as a child watching this movie with my dad. I haven’t been able to watch it since my dad died, but it will always be my favorite.
Favorite Christmas Food
If you had asked me a year ago what my favorite food would be, it would be something sweet. But in the years since my dad died, we started a new tradition that every Christmas Eve, Raul makes Sopes for the family. We invite both sides of family and friends over for Christmas Eve at our house. Tonight our house was full of tons of friends and family. It was made special because our “adopted” son Paul was home for the holidays.
Now for the new Christmas Tradition
With part of the family still in California, I decided that we would start a new tradition for Christmas. I know it sounds corny, Christmas Pajamas. I figured if we can’t be together at Christmas, at least we can all dress alike. These Christmas Pajamas from Shinesty were just what the doctor ordered. I even got Allie, Myelin, Helix, and Nugget in the picture.
Of course, Gracie, my stylist, just wore the top of her pajamas as a nightgown. And we found some matching fabric to make a bow for Allie’s hair.
Mikaela had her own twist on her pajamas. Using one of her shirts instead of the one that paired with her pajama bottoms.
And Nugget stuck his little nose out for the picture.
Maddie and Lex and the fur grandbabies were all matching.
I used the same fabric that I used with Allie’s hairbow to make My and He matching scarves.
So from our family to yours, Feliz Navidad, Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and we hope you have a prosperous and Happy New Year.
