Paying Attention to Car Brakes = Safe Driving

Paying Attention to Car Brakes = Safe Driving from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

Let me tell you a story about three different drivers, also known as my girls. They are started out to be very cautious drivers but once their level of comfort increased behind the wheel, so did their expertise behind the wheel. ( Let me just add that Gracie is probably the most cautious driver of the family as she is still in the getting used to driving phase.)

Being on the other side of the car when a teenager is driving is no joke. You just have to quietly say a prayer and hope that your imaginary brake will control the car. 😉 Don’t laugh you know you do it too.

So back to the tale of the drivers, there is one of my girls who believes that the brake is an optional pedal on the car. She waits until the last minutes to apply it. She has never been in an accident that was her fault but she has given me quite a few gray hairs because of this.

That is why when I notice her brakes squeaking, I knew immediately that we need to get the brakes looked at and the brake pads replaced. And her dad, the mechanic agreed with me. Why was I so cautious and so proactive about getting those brakes looked at. Well because the brake system in your car is like your best friend. It can help you to avoid crashes, especially when the person in front of you fails to use their turn signals when they are turning. ( That is a total pet peeve of mine.) Plus there is also a chance that someone will pull out in front of you whether you are in the US or traveling in the United Kingdom, like in Essex.

It is important to know the warning signs of brake failures, so you can get them looked at immediately. Check out the list below.

Signs of Failing Brakes

  • Brake Light is on
  • Squealing or Grinding Noise when you apply the brakes
  • Vibration or wobbling sometimes squeaking when you apply the brakes.
  • Brake fluid leaks
  • Soft brake pedal- almost have to push the pedal to the floor to get it to respond
  • The car pulls to one side when braking
  • Burning smell

If you have any of these happening with your car take it to your mechanic and get it checked out.
