cow pie chronicles

My husband grew up on a farm right in between two major cities in Mexico. Whenever we go to visit my girls are always enchanted with the ways of farm life. That farm life is portrayed in “The Cow-Pie Chronicles” by James Butler. It is a life that only my girls and I could dream about.

Here is a brief summary of the book.  This book follows 10 year old Tim Slinger and his little sister Dana as they grow up on their family dairy farm. Join Tim on his many crazy adventures- from teasing a bull to building forts in the hayloft- and learn the realities of life on a farm, including the hard work required of Tim and Dana to take care of the land and their farm animals.

I will have to say that I was amused by how Dana and Tim learned to use their imagination to entertain themselves. Life on the farm is a lot of hard work but it is also very rewarding. My favorite part of the book was when their city cousins would come to visit. Their cousins were unaware of farm life so Dana and Tim had a lot of fun with that. The cow pie throwing contest was very hilarious.

I also loved the fact that this book could be used in a classroom as a teaching tool. There are tons of vocabulary words in bold. It also includes a glossary to look up the words. The author also offers a free teacher’s guide online- so if a teacher chooses to use this book in the classroom they can.

This book is a great read for children and adults alike. It is a great book to bond with your kids while reading it together.
