I mentioned this post when I wrote the story of my daughter’s wedding, but I didn’t really know where or how to begin with this post. So let’s start at the beginning. So the beginning is and you will soon find out how to host a cat themed rehearsal dinner of your own.

But before I get into that, let me give you a little backstory. Maddie and Lex had been dating each other a few years before they decided that they wanted to live together. One of the first things they did after moving into their apartment was to adopt a kitten. This was actually a very easy thing for them to do because Markie ( the stray cat that has claimed our hearts) ended up having four kittens, ( three girls and one boy). Their names were Julio, Mia, Jinxy, and Tyger. Mia disappeared one day. Jinxy and Tyger are still around. Tyger is my husband’s favorite- she literally comes running when she sees him drive up. Jinxy is the silliest one but she is also the one with the most attitude. And then there is Julio who is now known as Myelin. He was adopted by Maddie and Lex and is living the good life in California.

But soon after they adopted Myelin, they decided he needed a friend so they went to a shelter in Greensboro and adopted a black and white cutie who they named Helix. ( Did you know that black cats are less likely to be adopted?) Maddie and Lex think of Myelin and Helix as their children. So you can imagine how hard it was for them to come back to North Carolina to get married and leave the boys in California. It was really hard, so to make sure that they were part of the wedding we had their love for their cats as their wedding hashtag. Of course, it helped that Lex’s real name is Katsuya. #MadsGotKatsed and #MeowedandForever.

Creating A Cat Bride and Groom

We even incorporated the cats in her bachelorette dinner crawl with Maddie’s Getting Meowed shirt. ( No lie she wore it on the plane going back to California after the wedding.) But back to the rehearsal dinner. It all started with a cat statue that I found at Carolina Pottery. I picked it up just thinking this would be something nice for them later on. But once I got it home, I took one look at it and decided I could make these cats into a bride and groom cat. So out came the hot glue gun, glue sticks, ribbon, and lace. I created a bowtie the same color as Lex’s tie for the ceremony and glue a piece of lace on top of the smaller cat’s head to create a bride and groom cat.

Decorating the Tables

After that, I started looking on Pinterest for more cat-inspired decor. I came up with the idea to use the vases that we had bought for the ceremony as the centerpieces for the table. But instead of flowers, we put in rolled-up balls of yarn. We placed these on pieces of cat printed and paw print fabric. And then surrounding them we put cat figurines like this and that

The Welcome Table

The bride and groom cat sat proudly at this table along with a pawprint we found at Hobby Lobby and we saved money used the Hobby Lobby Coupons we found. Maddie and Lex painted this bright pink with a black outline and grabbed some sharpies to use as their guest book for the rehearsal dinner. This along with two vases and signs that we made with their names on it graced the table.

The Cake

I will admit that this was a last-minute thought. But luckily I have an amazing friend Courtney who hooked me up with her cake maker. We decided to have a chocolate cake made to look like an orange tabby cat. This represented both of their boys. Myelin the orange outside and Helix the chocolate inside. This was placed on the table next to a framed engagement announcement, which of course included their boys. And it is how the whole cat theme started.

And of course, I would be a bad mom if I didn’t mention the amazing guest book that Gracie painted for them. It was a portrait of them from behind with both My’s and He’s heads included. Lex was a little salty about it to begin with because Helix is his cat, but then he looked and realized that if Helix was painted behind him he wouldn’t show up. So tell me what do you think of our cat themed rehearsal dinner.
