How To Calm Your Nerves Before A Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, clinically known as an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and fat in the abdomen, in order to create a flatter, more contoured stomach. 

While the aesthetic and functional benefits of a tummy tuck procedure are impressive, and in some cases life-changing, many patients find the decision to undergo surgery a daunting one.

However, feelings of anxiety are perfectly normal before a tummy tuck, even if you’ve had cosmetic surgery before. 

To help calm your nerves and put your mind at rest, we’ve compiled a list of five tips to follow in the days and weeks leading up to surgery. 

1) Pamper Yourself 

One of the best ways to reduce pre-surgery nerves is to indulge in some self-care. Take a long, hot bath and pour in some essential oils. Consider yoga, massage, or anything that is relaxing to you. 

It’s also a good idea to eat plenty of healthy, home-cooked food. Not only will this make you feel better before surgery, it can also help speed up the recovery process. 

2)Use Support From Family And Friends

Don’t be afraid to chat with a family member or friend about how you’re feeling. Support can often be found in a few surprising places, so be sure to maximize all available avenues

An effective way to calm your nerves and take your mind off surgery is to do something fun and simple like meeting a friend for lunch or spending quality time with your pet. 

3) Don’t Spend Too Much Time Online

While you don’t have to completely refrain from using the internet, it’s important to avoid getting caught up in other people’s experiences and opinions of the tummy tuck procedure. Reading about worst-case scenarios is only going to cause you further anxiety. 

If you need reassurance, you can discuss your fears and anxieties with your surgeon. This will allow you to build a trusting relationship with them, which is particularly important if some of your nerves stem from the potential for surgical errors. 

4) Keep A Journal

Many people find putting their fears and anxieties on paper can somewhat exorcise them from their mind. As your thoughts flow onto the paper, they can lose their hold on you, enabling you to channel your energy into more positive and productive activities. 

This is much better for you and your mental wellbeing than focusing all your thoughts on being fearful of the procedure. 

5) Have Your Post-Operative Plan In Place

Make sure you have your post-operative plan in place as this will provide you with peace of mind and give you one less thing to worry about during recovery.

Plan so that a trusted family member or friend can support you in the days following surgery. You will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from surgery, as well as someone to take care of young children or pets, run basic chores, and help you prepare meals. 

Also, be sure to find the most comfortable spot in your home where you can gently recline and recover after the procedure. Having lots of TV programs, films, and books readily available is a bonus.
