How Our Deck Made Me Examine My Life

deck life

Who knew that when we added our deck onto our house last year that it would not only transform the look of our home but also my life? There is nothing I love better than to grab a cup of coffee, go out on the deck and just sit and read for hours. I always have several books that I am reading.  Normally I have a fun pool book I like to call it. It is a book purely for entertainment but sometimes it ends up teaching me some lessons. Then, of course, I have my devotional, my Bible and my journal.

There is something to be said about reading the word of God,  surrounded by the beauty He created. I am currently reading Twelve Women of the Bible. I will admit that I only picked up this book because Lysa TerKeurst wrote one of the chapters. She is a total woman of God that just speaks to me. And after hearing her speak at the Intentionally and  Wonderfully Made conference, I grab up all her books that I can.

But I never thought that learning from these 12 women of the Bible that I would learn so much. I am only on the second woman, but the way God is working on my heart is amazing. I will admit that I am a victim of my negative self-talk. I look at myself and see all the flaws and not look at anything else. I wrote on my other blog Champagne Style Bare Budget that I am working hard to look past the flaws and see the beautiful woman of God that I am. I will admit that is a long journey. I still have a way to go, but I can feel Him working in my mind.

On the first day, I started reading the book; the woman was Eve. Reading about Eve lead me to post this picture on my Instagram.

Today the focus was on Rebekah. Not sure who she was? She was the mother of twins, Jacob, and Esau. She was an amazing woman, but she was not without her faults. Did you know that she favored one twin over the other, to such an extreme that she ended up cheating one of her sons out of his birthright? Wow, I know what you are thinking what a mother! But wait a minute, this is where the beauty comes in. Did you also know that she was the mom who created the bloodline  Jesus would be born into? Wow! I looked at this woman and thought to myself if God can use this woman with all her faults to create something so incredible as His Son, Jesus, then what can He also do with me.

I hear that, and I look in the mirror and think of course I am getting a thick in the middle, but I am also working on getting back into shape, but instead of seeing the person that I used to see, I am beginning to see the person that God created me to be. Just like Psalms 139:13-14 says there are certain things about my body that are unique to me and a blessing from God. I am slowly learning to embrace my blessings.

  1. It’s soooo easy to fall into the negative self talk, isn’t it? Sometimes I have to remind myself that I wouldn’t tolerate anyone else talking to me they way the voice in my head talks to me. It helps a little. 🙂 Thanks for sharing #HomeMattersParty
