Guest Post: Make Your Own Summer Fun

Well, the first week of summer vacation, that glorious week when the kids were just happy to be out of school, is behind us now and we moms are going to have to step up our game if we want to avoid a mutiny.  So, here are some of my favorite easy and cheap ideas for summer fun.

 Make With Your Kids

  • Sidewalk Chalk:  Mix a small box of plaster of paris as directed but add a squirt of dish washing liquid (to make it easier to clean up).  Pour into paper lined muffin pans.  Color each section a different color, stirring well to make a solid color or lightly to make a marble swirl. Allow to dry and harden as directed.  Peel off paper and watch the kids go crazy.
  • Bubble Solution:  At the first sign of a summer storm, mix 2/3 cup Joy dish washing liquid and 1 tablespoon of corn syrup with 1 gallon of water.  Allow to sit overnight and tell your children that they can make giant bubbles tomorrow.  Go out while the air is still damp and use shaped metal hangers, cans with both ends cut out of them or any other large, roughly round item to blow giant bubbles.
  • Hairy Eggheads:  Allow you child to carefully draw a face on a raw egg. Then gently use a knife to make a hole about the size of your thumb in the top of the egg.  Fill with potting soil and sprinkle in a little grass seed and water.  Sit in an open carton in the sun.  So your egg head will grow a head of hair that your child can trim in funny shape.  If you keep it watered, the grass will continue to grow all summer.

  • The Hand Held Sprinkler:  Rinse a gallon bleach or other similarly shaped jug very well.  Bunch holes in the bottom and screw the bottle on to your garden hose.  If necessary, use some duct tape to around the bottle opening before you screw it in so it will fit better.  Turn on the water and use it to shoot water over your kids.
  • Ice Cream Sandwiches:  Make a box of brownie mix in a large jelly roll pan so that they’re thin.  Allow the pan cool completely and then cut in half to create two giant brownies.  Slice frozen ice cream, of any flavor, into slices and spread over entire bottom half, topping with the other half.  Freeze until solid and cut into squares.  Keep in the freezer and pass out for special treats.

Do With Your Kids

  • Organize a Fourth of July Parade.  Get together with other families in the neighborhood and march down a quiet street or two with decorated bikes, strollers, wagons, pets or anything else you like.
  • Have a Yard Sale:  Encourage your child to clean out his closet and sell what he doesn’t want.  He’ll be thrilled with any money he makes.
  • Go to a Yard Sale:  Give him a couple of dollars and watch him go crazy buying up some other kid’s merchandise.
  • Build a Fort:  Pin sheets to and over a clothes line and let your child furnish it with wooden crates, toy chairs, etc.  Just be sure to take it down before it rains.

Remember when it comes to summer fun, what you do is not nearly as important as that you do it with the ones you love.
