Tutoring Made All The Difference

When my middle daughter was in first grade, I knew something was wrong. She was not learning at the same rate as her sister did. She could not grasp some of the simplest concepts. I had questioned her inability to learn in kindergarten but dismissed by the counselor at the school saying they never label a child with a learning disability in kindergarten. Halfway through her first grade year, it looked as if she would be retained unless some interventions were made. We took her to the doctor and had some tests run and she was officially diagnosed as having ADHD. (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) It took medicine, me working with her at home, her teacher as well as volunteer working with her at school, and private tutor that we hired to work with her after school to get her through her first grade year. There was no retention for her that year.

Looking back I see the thing that made the biggest difference with her was the one on one tutoring she had. The attention from her tutor allowed her to feel like she could accomplish anything. She loved all the positive feedback that she received from her tutor. It also helped that she saw her tutor as her own special friend that she did not have to share with her sisters.

So if you have a child that is struggling I would look into finding a tutor for them. There are a lot of tutoring sites like Maryland Tutors that can help you find the right tutor for your child. You can also check out your local high schools, churches and friends and families to see if there is a teenager that would be willing to help tutor a child. I have had the biggest success with high school students. They are also a lot cheaper than most tutors. Mikaela had a tutor for over a year that was a high school student and when Gracie was struggling in Math in fourth grade, we hired one of Maddie’s friends to tutor her and they were both amazing. So make sure you get your child the help they need by finding a tutor that is suitable for their needs. Some children need a more structured environment so a more experienced tutor would be the best choice. But if your child needs just a little help, then check into other alternatives. I am sure glad that I did. It made all the difference in my children’s education.
