An apology and an Explanation

An apology and an Explanation from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

Sorry for the lack of posting this week. My life has been crazy since Tuesday. So keep reading for my heartfelt apology Gracie, my youngest, had her appointment with the pediatric gastroenologist. He was not concerned with her IBS at all. This is a child who constantly complains about her stomach hurting and the pain that she is in. The gastroentologist did not even run tests for her. He felt her stomach and her ribs and said she had floating rib syndrome and to come back in three months. OK why if he wasn’t concerned about her IBS does she need to come back in three months time. Late Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning Gracie woke up and went to the bathroom and threw up. She then crawled into bed with me. Not knowing if it was something she ate I kept her home that day from school. I noticed that her belly was really bloated and that she had a bruise where the doctor had poked on her left side. My poor baby was in so much pain. She slept alot that day. We had an appointment with our regular pediatrician on Thursday already scheduled. When we went in, our pediatrician who I absolutely adore (she has been the girls preferred Doctor since Mikaela who is now 13 was born), asked what the doctor had said. I told her I wasn’t that impressed with him and the diagnosis. She asked me what he told me to do for the pain. I said, “He said to give her Motrin.” That surprised her because Motrin can cause stomach problems in children and it would just seem to aggravate Gracie’s problem. She suggested I get a second opinion which we are going to do. We have an appointment on June 1st at Duke. In the meantime, she sent Gracie to the radiologist to have chest xrays of her ribs. They found nothing wrong – no dislocations, no broken bones and yes her ribs are floating. She called today to let me know. Yes a pediatrician that calls their patients with test results. That is why we love her soo much. She is still concerned about Gracie, she wants me to keep her updated on how she is doing. If she misses school then I am to let her know. (Gracie missed 3 days this week- because of this) She is as concerned as I am for my little girl. I have dealt with this for so long that I guess this week it came to a head for me. I felt myself sinking into a depression and I was afraid if I blogged that negative attitude would come out in the blog and I would lose followers. I love all you guys so much and didn’t want to risk losing not even one of you. I will be updating you on the Gracie saga as it is an ongoing saga. I just want my little girl to be well and to have the happy little girl she was once back. I am trying to downplay the situation with her but she senses something is up. I know all this worrying is causing undue stress which can make her IBS worse.

An another note would love to hear if anyone else has ever dealt with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and what worked best for them . I am willing to try anything. So thank you for reading my apology.

  1. I have never dealt with IBS and my heart goes out to you. I'm interested in learning about it though. My daughter does not have IBS but she does have a condition called Blount's Disease.

  2. Floating Ribs? I've never heard of that.
I agree that you need to get another opinion tho!

  3. There is no need to apologize- you take care of that little one and update us ASAP!

  4. Oh my goodness you poor thing! It really sucks when our little ones are in so much pain without being able to help them. From medical dictionary: Floating rib: One of the last two ribs. A rib is said to be “floating” if it does not attach to the sternum (the breast bone) or to another rib. It is said to cause pain, but not IBS. 🙁 Hope all is well soon. My thoughts will be with your and your baby.

  5. You keep at it, Mama. My girls don't have medical problems but LD's and all kids of behavioral issues. One of Knuckles Pediatricians told me she thought her prob was that she was a 'Low IQ' child. Trust me, that's not her problem! You keep fighting for your baby because Dr's won't. Get on the internet and find the name of every Pediatric gastroenterologist in your state. Start calling. I spend countless hours on the phone trying to get Drs and evals for my girls.
And don't worry about loosing followers. We want to hear your story!

  7. Your poor little Gracie! I hope you get to the bottom of whatever is ailing her. I agree with Melissa, you wont lose followers if you take the time to vent a little, so if it helps, go ahead and do it. In fact, I'm a new follower, I hope you update about your little girl when you get some answers.

  8. Poor little one! I agree that you should definitely get a second opinion -that first doctor doesn't sound too competent. How wonderful that you have a great pediatrician – we have an amazing family doctor too and it makes such a huge difference.
I'm not very experienced with IBS and children, but have you tried probiotics? They can make a huge difference with intestinal issues and overall health. Just a thought…

Good luck & I'll keep you & Gracie in my thoughts & prayers. I'm visiting from the Alexa hop!

  10. Sorry your daughter is not feeling well. I was diagnosed with IBS as a child and given Metamucil. As I've gotten older, however, I think it was actually a milk allergy. If I consume too much milk, I have serious digestion problems, and even cramping. Have you considered food allergies?

  12. Oh my, this post brings back memories! My daughter just turned 12, but for the majority of the first 8 years of her life she complained all the time of tummy aches and stomach pains. We ended up going to a pediatric gastroenterologist, and he called it IBS and put her on benefiber, miralax, and two other prescription medications. Long story short, my daughter was never constipated so we decided against daily laxative. I did give her the benefiber, because she didn't have nearly enough fiber in her diet. Shortly after the specialist visit she stopped having stomach aches all the time. I don't know if it was coincidental, fiber, or some other thing, but I am so glad she “outgrew” it.
I hope you are able to find answers and/or relief for her!

  13. hi! I will keep you in my thoughts. Even though I have no actual diagnosis of IBS I totally cannot eat garlic. I will have the same symptoms as your daughter. i figured this out one day after eating at an Italian restaurant and had severe symptoms. I am not saying your daughter has a garlic allergy, I am just pointing out you never know what it could be. keep an eye out for things that trigger it. Really, I am just trying to be helpful and hope things turn out for the absolute best. Stopped by from the Alexa hop. :)Domestic Executive Online.

  14. Hi, New follower from the Alexa Hop. Actually, my son was diagnosed with encopresis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encopresis
It took a long time to get that diagnosis. He was in third grade before a doctor ever solved it. (finally) It was a rough time for him and us. Really rough. Not understanding what the problem was was the hardest issue. He is 18 years old today, in college, doing fine. I can tell you this, nothing helped. In third grade, the doc did an exray of his intestines. They were 5 times larger than an adults. They had been stretched to that shape from all the previous years of not knowing what this was. His suffering was great. Massive. Not just physically but mentally. Look up Encopresis. Read about it. The thing that worked for my son was finding out what was wrong with him. We did the swallowing mineral oil, etc…eventually, he outgrew it. (somewhat)

  15. One of my biggest concerns about being a military wife is not being able to find an amazing pediatrician and stick with them for my (future) childrens' entire childhood. I was fortunate enough to have a fantastic doctor who even saw me for a few years after I turned 18 since she was still seeing my siblings and was so familiar with my particular issues. I guess I'll just have to hunt every time we move! It's wonderful that you have at least one great doctor on your team for dealing with these problems. Good luck!

  16. I was a huge sufferer of IBS, and I found things that really helped was cutting out processed foods, I can eat some now, but in college I ate a lot and my IBS was horrible. So much more natural food. Instead of Kraft Dinner I started making my own pasta, etc. I still suffered but not as much. For me something that really helped was making sure I had at minimum 8 glasses of water a day. If I stay very hydrated it doesn't seem to bother me at all. That was HUGE for me!! When it does really act up, and I know I have been misbehaving I drink chamomile tea, it calms everything down. Another thing for me is the stress, so if she is stressed about being in pain, or having to go to the doctor it can be causing her to feel worse!!!
