women in business series from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

Today I am introducing you to someone I greatly admire. I have watched her career take off and I am just in awe of the everything she is doing in her life. Last year when my blog was down she actually took the time to call me to see and if she could help out. I ended up taking her suggestions and switching hosting sites. Tiffany is also the one that introduced me to the Women’s Business Center and there Monday Motivations. I look forward to attending every month. Before I introduce you to Tiffany Haywood, I want to remind you that you can find all of the amazing women profiled in this series here.

Tell me a little bit about you.

My name is Tiffany Haywood. I was born and raised in Da Bronx (yep, is Da not the) New York. I was raised by my maternal Grandmother who is a true old school, bible-toting, give you a look and you’re done kinda, woman. I credit her for the way I raise my children now.   Although I always say I was raised ‘on the altar’ I, like many teens, had my days of rebellion when I tried to stray the path I’d been raised on. That rebellion resulted in a teen pregnancy. My oldest son is now 23 and one of my best friends. I know now that all the struggles of learning what it meant to be a mom with him to help me become the woman and mother I am now and for that I am grateful.

I married my husband in 2004 after an almost 2 year dating period. He is retired military and our Army duties have taken us to North Carolina, Hawaii and back again. I am proud to say we have chosen to make Fayetteville, North Carolina our forever home. It is here in Fayetteville that I discovered Blogging. I was searching for a way to keep my mind occupied as I stayed home with 3 Kiddies under 3! Oops! I almost forgot! In total my husband and I have 6 Kiddies. There’s the top 3 who are all in their 20s now and then our younger set you are 13, 10 an 9.  I started my Blog TheMrsTee (f/k/a MrsTee Love Life Laughter – what a mouthful!) because I wanted a way to share my writing and thoughts with actual adults.

Tell me about your business.

My business began with my blog – TheMrsTee but has since evolved into TheMrsTee, LLC. A few years ago, I realized what I started as a hobby and outlet for my words had the potential to become an income. It was then changed my mindset, changed my strategy and began organizing it as just that. Soon after I saw that different friends, business owners and acquaintances were coming to me for ways to manage and grow their own businesses through social media. That’s how TiffanyHaywood.com became the next extension of my Brand. Tiffany Haywood Blog & Brand Consultations is where I offer easy to apply tips, tools and methods for small business owners to build their business by building their brands. Through one-on-one consultations, tutorials, site audits, workshops and presentations I empower small business owners to use social media to gain reach, impact, and influence for their business.

What struggles have you faced in your business?

I don’t really like the word struggle. There have been ups and downs in building my business which is normal. I think learning that it isn’t always what I do as a Consultant that makes me stand out but why and how. Sharing pieces of who I am, how I reached my own goals and why I want to help others is what makes my approach as well as my teaching style different from other consultants.  I take this unique and make it work for my business and my brand. This helps eliminate the struggle of the process and give me more attainable goals and targets for achievement.

How have you overcome those struggles?

Oops! I guess I jumped ahead a bit and answered this as part of the above question. My plan of attack for any struggle is prayer and persistence. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel – I just need to push my way through.

Who were your mentors growing up?

I was blessed enough to grow up surrounded by strong, determined, faith-filled women who were teaching me empowerment before it was a ‘thing’. The foundation of faith laid by my Grandmother and the frame of courage, strength and positive support added by my aunts (I had 6) gave me what I needed to make it in life as well as business. Many of the methods I use to stay focused, stay driven and most of all stay prayed up come from the examples they gave me as a child. I could look to any one of them and see no matter what changes in life came faith and belief in your purpose would bring you through to the other side.

If you were to give advice to a woman going into the field you are in what would it be?

I would give the same advice I give to my clients and fellow small business owners: “find your unique and make it your biggest and best asset!”In business, we are either offering a service or a product yet many times neither of those is completely unique to us. Yet what is unique is who we are and what we put into what we do, how we do it and why we do it.  That is what will make you stand out from the rest. It is you who will draw in your ideal client, customer, and even potential collaboration partner.  Take that piece of you – your story – and make it the connecting point between yourself, your product/service and your client. Have you found that being a woman in your field is harder or easier? Tell me about the advantages and disadvantages of being a woman.   I really haven’t. As a life rule, I make every effort not to see man vs. woman. I see motivation, inspiration, and challenges in others in my field. I admire what they do and allow their success to motivate me to push harder to achieve my own. If you haven’t noticed, there are certain words and expressions I simply do not allow in my mindset. I replace them with others that drive me towards I can instead of reminding me of an I can’t. Instead of a disadvantage, I see the challenge. Whatever someone may place in front of me does not have the power to hold me back, make me less than of stop my forward motion. No, those obstacles simply challenge me to find new paths, options, and creative solutions to still achieve all I have planned.

Have you ever had to overcome a hostile work environment?

Hostile is a strong word. Have I had personalities and different moods to deal with when at work, yes – of course? BUT I never allowed them to be the determining factor on how my day would go.

What made you decide on your chosen field?

I went into the field of being a business consultant because I love the moment when I see a client have that ‘light bulb moment’ when they realize the thing they feared, the social platform they never thought they could master or the goal they didn’t think they could achieve is possible. It’s all possible. Sometimes we just need a bit of help to get there. I wanted to be that help – the one willing to share what others may not. I know that sharing doesn’t take away from my own success but simply adds to the success of those around me which for me is always a win!
