Tips for Planning a Great Family Vacation

Tips for Planning a Great Family Vacation

Okay, y’all, get your planning hats on, because it’s time to start planning those summer vacations! In my experience, vacations are a great chance for the whole family to spend time together without the stress of school, work, or other responsibilities. Yes, vacations will probably look a little bit different this summer, but just because it’s different doesn’t mean your vacation can’t still be great! Try these tips for planning a great family vacation to plan a memorable trip that the whole family will enjoy.

Choose a Destination for the Whole Family

When choosing a destination, make sure to choose a location that the whole family can enjoy. If you would love it but your kids would hate it (or vice versa), the idea has to go. Maybe your family has always wanted to visit a tropical island or take an exotic ski trip. If you want to stay closer to home, there are plenty of great places to visit in the US as well! Discuss your options with your family and choose a destination that everyone will love.

We can all agree that traveling with your family can be a little stressful, especially when you’re not confident about driving in a foreign country. But you shouldn’t let that hold you back from exploring the globe. Let’s say you were planning a trip to the Philippines wouldn’t you want to rent a car in the Philippines so you can enjoy more of your trip and see more of the country?

Stick To Your Budget

This one is important, y’all—make a budget for your trip and stick to it. This goes for big things and little things. Yes, I know those souvenirs look fancy, and the kids say they just need to have them—but if you don’t have the budget for them, don’t cave! In a month, they’ll just be cluttering up your house anyways. Begin budgeting for your vacation well in advance, and when you’re planning, do leave a little bit of financial wiggle room to allow you to book a taxi in Montreal (or wherever your destination) if the weather turns bad, as well as for some other fun unplanned expeditions and purchases along the way.

Book Kid Friendly Accommodations

As you book your hotel or rental vacation home, check that the lodging is kid-friendly. My kids always loved when the hotel had a swimming pool, a game room, or a nearby playground. If it means your kids are kept entertained, it pays to do a little extra research before booking the place you’ll stay at.

Create a Packing List

If you’ve ever tried to go anywhere with the kids, you know that they need a packing list. I learned this the hard way—one time, my kids even forgot to bring their swimsuits on our trip to the ocean! To avoid situations like this, make a packing list for each of your kids with the essentials. Be sure to consider your destination and pack the right clothes for the weather. Especially if your kids are younger, you may need to help them choose what to pack and organize it in their suitcases.

Using these tips for planning a great family vacation will help your entire family have a vacation to remember! Even as you plan, remember to save room for spontaneity. That way, your family vacation will truly be a unique experience that you create and enjoy together. Safe and happy travels!
