Thrifty Ways To Save Money on a Road Trip

Planning out the perfect vacation getaway with your loved ones is a joyous time. However, budgeting for the occasion brings on some anxiety, especially when y’all enter some unfamiliar territory. Therefore, before your next rendezvous, use these thrifty ways to save money on a road trip to maximize the fun and minimize the spending!

Book Accommodations in Advance

As the age-old adage proclaims, “the early bird gets the worm.” Nothing is more authentic when it comes to booking your accommodations. I’ve learned my lesson by now and always try to get my affairs in order ahead of time.

Y’all precisely know when that vacation starts and ends, so why not lock in those rates well beforehand? I try to find rates that I can cancel in case things hit the fan. But paying ahead of time is one less expense you must worry about before getting in the car.

Find Cheap Parking

It’s so easy to concentrate on your road trip checklist and getting to your destination so much that you overlook what you’re going to do once you get there. In most cases, paying for parking is an unavoidable factor of traveling. However, when I get my parking sorted out early, I save tens if not hundreds of dollars throughout my stay. There are several apps or websites y’all can use to save a bundle on this easily forgettable component.

Bring Snacks From Home

Loading up on pepperoni pizza Combos and Sour Patch Kids at a rest stop may excite the kiddos, but it can be costly to keep swiping when someone is hungry. Instead, pack some healthy snacks from home to satisfy everyone’s hunger demands. Items like nuts, granola, or fruits and veggies aren’t as yummy as gas station junk food. But they will fill the stomach without your family consuming a bunch of empty calories.

Get Your Car Serviced Before Leaving

When you are hundreds of miles away from home, any car problem causes panic. How am I going to get this fixed? Where am I going to take it? How much is it going to cost? For those reasons, I like to get my car the works before I hit the gas. Have a mechanic check that your fluids, tires, lights, and wiper blades are working so y’all don’t have to worry.

Avoid Oasis Gas Prices

The law of demand rears its ugly head when it comes to gasoline prices. Companies set up shop on major highways are the biggest culprits, considering y’all must pay extra for that rest stop gasoline. I like to rear off the main roads when I need a fill-up, getting that small-town discount.

Prepare for the Worst

Even if you are a glass-half-full type of person, it helps always to assume the worst thing will happen when you are planning a budget. Getting roadside assistance and having the tools available in case of an emergency keeps you safe without having to spend an exuberant amount of money.

I hope these thrifty ways to save money on a road trip reduce your anxieties and let you enjoy the open road ahead!
