The Household Notebook: A Must-Have for Home Organization

monthly plannerIf you’re struggling to organize all of the important documents for your family and household that you collect over the years, you’re not alone. Sometimes it seems that tracking all these things and keeping up with work, kids, and the household are more than a full-time job. One big trend in home organization right now is the household notebook. You can put a lot of effort into it to make it super nice and organized, or put in the bare minimum effort and still utilize it. It’s inexpensive to create, and once you set up a system for adding to it and subtracting from it, you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to have a single, go-to location for all your important documents.

Taxes

Come tax time, it’s frustrating enough to have to fill out all that paperwork or schedule appointments with your tax advisor. Prepare for tax time in advance by adding a tax section to your notebook, and throw important items in there, such as your W2 forms, copies of past tax forms, receipts that can give you a write-off, household items particular to property taxes, and anything else that might come in handy before April 15th. Be sure that any tax professional you work with is certified, and it might be helpful to ensure that you understand your taxes. Not all tax professionals are perfect. Consider checking out some online llm taxation programs for some continued education.

Personal Documents

If you struggle to keep track of important documents for the members of your family, use baseball card pages to trap and keep social security cards for your entire family. No one is supposed to carry a social security card in their wallet — especially with recent increases in identity theft — so keep a safe, secure location to store them. You’re also not supposed to laminate social security cards, so keeping them all together in a plastic sleeve is a fantastic way to keep the safe and easy-to-access.

Alongside social security cards, you can create holders for birth certificates and passports, or other items of identification that you don’t need to carry on you all the time but are important to keep track of. Consider keeping your notebook in a safe or other secure location to protect these important documents. Also, keep the birth certificates in plastic page protectors, so they’ll be in good condition for years to come.
