Remembering Congressman Walter B. Jones

Remembering Congressman Walter B. Jones from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

I was scrolling on Facebook when I came upon a story that truly touched my heart. A man who did so much for the community, a man I so greatly admired. A man who looked past prejudice and stereotype and did what was right. A man who not only helped but was the driving force in making sure that my little family stayed together. A man who cut through the governmental red tape to make things right. A man who wasn’t afraid to admit when he made a mistake even if it meant telling millions of Americans that it was a mistake. A man who wrote letters of apology to the families that cost them their loved ones because that one yes vote was a mistake. That man died on his 76th birthday Sunday.

That man was North Carolina Congressman Walter B. Jones. I will admit that I never knew him before my husband Raul had problems with his immigration status. Although we were married and by that time had two daughters ages 5 and 3, the government still did not believe it was a marriage of convenience. 25 years later the joke is still on them. At the time the husband and wife who Raul worked for knew Congressman Jones. They asked him to get involved with his case.

And get involved he did. We were sent by immigration the American Consulate in Cuidad Juarez to get his status straightened out only to be told that he wasn’t allowed to get back in the country. As I have mentioned before, Raul and I spent several months away ( November to February) from each other during this time. It would have been longer if Congressman Jones and his office had not cut through the red tape and got status amended, He did this for someone he had never met. He did this because he knew it was the right thing to do.

Yep you read that right he did this for someone he never even met. In fact, we did not meet Congressman Jones until after Raul came back into the country in February. And I was happy to tell him and his staff in person how thankful I was for everything he did for our little family. He stood for what was right and I will forever be thankful to the man who knew and understood that families needed to be together.

And for that I will forever be thankful for this dear man and for his service as Congressman to this country. Rest in peace, kind gentleman. You will always be remembered in our hearts and years to come our grandchildren will know what an amazing man you were and how you were influential in keeping our family together.
