In The Rainbow Egg, by Linda K. Hendricks, M.D. the issue of adoption is addressed but in a different way. Just read a brief summary of the book below.

Hope is a chicken who happens upon an egg. Looking for a place to help raise it, a guardian red bird leads her to a chicken house full of chicken families. There she finds challenges and fear ultimately leading to the most precious gift she could ever hope for. The Rainbow Egg is a beautifully illustrated, delightful fresh look at adoption as a loving gift.

I will have to say that I was very impressed with the way that the subject matter of adoption was handled in this book. I love how Hope realizes that she could not give her egg the life it deserves and makes the ultimate sacrifice to give up her baby to  a loving home. This is a little known fact about me I have two cousins who are adopted, my uncle and his wife could not have children so adoption was the route they took. They were very blessed with a boy and a girl who has bought them so much joy.

This book is such a great way to educate children about adoption. Sometimes this issue is hard for children to understand. All they know is someone gave them up. Not knowing what was behind the decision to be given up for adoption, most children can now come to understand that this was not a decision that was made lightly and with love.  That it was not because their birth mom did not want them it was because she knew that she could not provide them with the life that they deserved. I would definitely recommend this book to add your children’s library and if you home school this would be an awesome educational tool.
