Sausage Biscuit and Gravy Casserole

Sausage Biscuit and Gravy Casserole by North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

Anyone that has ever been to my house knows that when I am in the mood to cook, I cook. Although with our busy lives it is not always possible when I get the opportunity to try out new recipes I jump at the chance. And when I was asked if I would like to review a new cookbook from Southern Living called Sunday Suppers by Cynthia Graubart, I couldn’t wait for it to come in the mail. When I received it in the mail, I immediately started combing through it looking for my next cooking experiment. And I found several, and I was able to make a few shortcuts because as you know, I am a shortcut kind of cook. So here is my take on her Sausage Biscuit Gravy Bake.

I am including the full recipe that the book had, but I am also going to add my shortcuts.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground pork sausage ( or if you have brown and serve sausage which I had in my freezer- you can use that. Here is a note our local grocery store had these for buy one get one free awhile back, so that is why I still had some in my freezer. I had the patties, but the links will work as well.)
  • 2 two teaspoons of canola oil ( I didn’t use this as the sausage gave it enough grease I didn’t need to add any more.)
  • 5 tablespoons of butter or country crock
  • 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups of milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • cooking spray
  • 8 refrigerated Jumbo biscuits
  • 1/2 cup of green onions ( I left those off because we aren’t big onion fans.)
  • 1/4 cup of shredded sharp Cheddar Cheese ( I didn’t have any cheddar, so I used mozzarella cheese.)

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF.

  • Cook sausage in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Remove sausage from skillet and drain.
  • If you choose the route I took with the brown and serve, then you will need to take time to cut them into little pieces.
  • Melt butter or country crock in skillet.

  • Top with half of the sausage mixture and if you choose to go the green onion route then you can add them now.
  • Repeat the layers.

  • Sprinkle with cheese.
  • Bake at 350ºF for 40 minutes or until golden brown.

I made this recipe when my girls and Lex were home for Thanksgiving. They headed back to school that Friday because of research projects they are involved with so I wanted to make sure they had a good brunch before they hit the road. If I had to do this differently, I would have waited until the last 10 minutes to add the cheese but other than that it was delicious.

  2. The oldest daughter is a researcher in a science lab. And the other daughter is a design major and she has done so many art projects this year. I am in awe of both of them.

  3. It was the first time I made it and it was hit. But I am glad I used the brown and serve sausage it made it quick
