Perks of Taking a Road Trip With Your Kids

As stay-at-home orders kicked in, we were faced with a whole new level of getting to know our children as we struggled to support their learning remotely. As the weather starts to move into the warmer months of the year, what can we do to foster some learning and connect with our kiddos outside of the home? Considering the perks of taking a road trip with your kids may give you some new ideas on how to enjoy your time together.

Open the Lines of Communication

Even when we see each other every day, it doesn’t mean we are present. Taking a road trip and putting away the devices will allow you and your family to take in the scenery, regroup, and talk. Whether you’re singing together, playing a game, or talking (even if they’re little), you’re giving each other attention and developing speech.

Being in a car together and looking at what different parts of the country have to offer is a great way to remain socially distant from much of society while getting closer to your loved ones. This is a perfect platform for you to tell each other stories and get reacquainted without the hustle and bustle of your normal schedules.

Let Loose a Little

Parenting is difficult, and most of the time, kids act like being the child is the hard part. Structure in everyday life is important, and ensuring that each member of the family is where they’re supposed to be at all times is taxing. Your road trip is your time to let your hair down a bit with your kiddos.

Binge on junk food, sing loudly, and just let loose. Kids want to have fun and they love you. Utilizing your trip to shuck a bit of those parental responsibilities can be a freeing feeling for everyone. A little silliness and a few less rules is ok for a short time.

Visit Historical Locations

Often, we don’t find the time to venture outside of the areas we live. If we do, it’s for a long-awaited and most likely completely planned vacation. There are so many beautiful and historical places to visit. Consider encouraging your kids’ interest in science and geography by making your way to a fossil-rich area of the country. Dinosaurs’ remains are scattered throughout many of the states.

Additionally, there are a variety of incredible places to see. It depends on how far you want to travel and what specifically interests your children. In a year where most schooling was done from a kitchen table, it can be amazing to do some hands-on learning in our big, wide, world.

The perks of taking a road trip with your kids are plentiful. With a bit of a plan, you can even camp at night to save on lodging expenses. The great thing about this endeavor is that you and your family can set the rules and change the trajectory at any time. You’ll still be together, and you’ll still be out of the house!
