What Causes Breast Sag?

Our breasts sag inevitably as we age. Unfortunately, we will all go through it when we get older. However, there are a lot of factors that come into play aside from aging.

First, having large breasts can cause breast sag. The greater the mass, the more vulnerable they are to the pull of gravity. Since we are already on gravity, how does it really affect our breasts?

Well, of course, as it pulls our breasts down, the ligaments loosen and put tension on the surrounding skin. This skin tends to stretch.

We should also look at breast involution, the process where our milk-producing tissues shrink once they are no longer used or needed. As they shrink, the skin surrounding them remain the same. So, your breasts will seem empty.

Multiple pregnancies are also said to cause breast sag. When we are pregnant, we go through dramatic hormonal changes. These can cause our milk ducts to shrink and to expand, leading to sagging tissues.

Other factors believed to cause breast sag to include collagen deficiency, drastic weight gain or loss, high body mass index (BMI), menopause, and smoking.

How Can You Prevent Breast Sag?

Now that we have an idea about the possible causes of breast sag, it will be easier for us to determine the best prevention methods. Let us discuss these thoroughly as we go along.

1.  Avoid Sun Exposure

The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays are excellent sources of free radicals, which are harmful chemicals that can damage our skin. These free radicals trigger the appearance of sag and wrinkles easily.

Also, UV rays can break down our skin’s elastin fiber layers. When this happens, sagging is almost impossible to avoid.

So, one of the best ways to prevent sag is avoiding sun exposure. Should it not be possible, make sure that you wear sunscreen protection. Doing so will help counter the negative effects of UV rays on your skin.

Of course, UV rays do not just affect our breasts. They affect our entire body, with our skin being our largest organ. With climate change, the sun is now even more harmful than ever. So, we should make every effort to protect our skin if we want to keep it healthy. This is especially important as we age.

2.  Eat Healthy.

While there is no strong evidence supporting the connection between breast sag and diet, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is still essential. Accordingly, foods rich in antioxidants helps keep our skin supple. As a result, they help minimize or control the appearance of sag and wrinkles.

Staying hydrated is also important if we are to nourish our skin. Drinking plenty of water every day helps preserve our skin’s natural elasticity. Effectively, it helps avoid sagging and wrinkling.

Be mindful not to undergo extreme weight gain or weight loss efforts as well. Any drastic change in our weight can cause breast sag almost immediately.

The key here is to maintain a consistent, healthy weight. You would not want to gain or lose that much quicker. Should you really desire to, make sure that it is nothing but a gradual change.

How can you do this? Make sure that you eat fruits and vegetables. Control your calorie intake when necessary. If you are working out, you should optimize your healthy protein intake.

3. Exercise Regularly.

Exercising regularly is a must. However, there is a need for us to highlight here why and how it helps keep our breasts firm.

So, we all know that our breasts are made up of tissues, right? Well, underneath these tissues lie the pectoral muscles. These are responsible for the function and strength of our arms.

Strengthening and toning our pectoral muscles optimizes our overall posture. As a result, strong pectoral muscles help reduce the appearance of sag.

Further, as I have mentioned earlier, it is vital that we maintain a consistent weight. Well, what better way to ensure that than to work out every day, right? Effectively, we can prevent any changes with our breast shape— at least those associated with drastic weight changes.

4. Stop Smoking

Believe it or not, research shows that women who smoke or have smoked are likely to experience breast sag after pregnancy. Smoking worsens the sagging of our breasts as we age as well.

Moreover, smokers are likely to age faster than non-smokers. Smoking destroys our elastin, a protein keeping our skin supple. So, the appearance of sag happens earlier and worse than expected. As we all understand by now too, aging causes our breast tissues to lose firmness quickly.

If you are not smoking or have not smoked in your lifetime, then that is good! Keep it that way. There is nothing to worry about.

However, if you are still a smoker, it is time for you to think twice about it. Quit while you still can! You would not just be preventing your breasts from sagging, you would also be prolonging your life.

5. Wear The Right Bra

So, you are doing everything right… you are protecting yourself against the harmful effects of the sun; you are eating a balanced diet; you are working out regularly, and you are not smoking. The question now is, are you wearing the right bra? Or “Which is the Best Bra for Sagging Breasts?” or something like that.

Wait… what do we even mean when we say “right bra”?

When you are working out, make sure that you are wearing a supportive sports bra. This is especially true if you have large breasts.

You would want to keep them from bouncing every time you are at the gym or park. Bouncing just strains your breast skin even more; so, you would want to avoid that. A snug fit is a key to keep your breasts firm, regardless of how extreme your physical activities are.

The right bra has adjustable straps that let you customize the fit. It has inner seaming circling the sides and the bottom of your breasts, too. It should never be flimsy and thin.

You would know that a bra is too big for you if it slides up in the back. The same goes for cups with gaps. On the other hand, you would know that it is too small for you if your breasts spill out or the band is too tight.

In fact, experts suggest that we undergo a professional fitting every six months to a year. Accordingly, our bra sizes may change without us noticing it. Factors such as weight changes are the leading cause.

Such is free at any lingerie store. Some major department stores also offer this service for free.

To Wrap It Up…

Breast sag is inevitable as we age. However, this does not mean there is something we cannot do about it. So, you do not have to feel down once you notice your breast shape changing. You can start regaining your confidence by doing the following:

  1. Avoid sun exposure
  2. Eat healthy
  3. Exercise regularly
  4. Stop smoking
  5. Wear the right bra
