The holidays are my favorite time of year and it is not because of the presents but because my favorite flower aka plant can be found everywhere. To me, Poinsettias are the most beautiful thing that God created. I can’t wait until I can decorate my house with them. They are no longer the traditional red ones they come in a variety of colors.

The poinsettia was first introduced to our country by a senator by the name of Robert Poinsett who brought them back from a trip to Mexico. Yep folks the flowers that we have come to see as a Christmas symbol was not original to this country, they are from Mexico. Maybe that is why I love them so much. Here are a few tips that will allow you to enjoy your poinsettia throughout the holiday season.

  • If your poinsettia is large and the pot is plastic transplant the plant into a heavy container for better stability. Inexpensive clay pots that you can find at any home improvement store or Michael’s would be best.
  • Most poinsettias come with pretty foil around them. It looks so pretty that you don’t want to take it off but in fact that prettiness is actually killing the plant. You need to remove it because it is a water trap which affects the root ball and shortens the life of the plant.

Poinsettias are not meant to be plants that last forever but at least by using these tips you can make them last longer which will allow the holiday spirit to linger as well.
