Helpful Skills To Teach Your Kids In Quarantine

Helpful Skills To Teach Your Kids In Quarantine from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

It seems like almost a year has passed since we came into lockdown, however, it is still a huge risk to be out in public and this time may continue for another few weeks and months until the world is safe. For those of us with kids, this means more time at home and away from school, and more time away from learning in a structured environment.

Teaching your kids can be hard, and as well as teachers providing helpful lesson plans for children at home, you can take this chance to teach your children something more life focussed. Today we are exploring some of the life skills and important lessons you can teach your child while they are at home this year.

How to budget

Whether your child is still in daycare or they have progressed to high school, teaching them how to budget is crucial for their future lives. To teach your child budgeting skills you can show them how your bills are split and essentials are paid for every month. You can even give your child some Monopoly money, make them pay ‘bills’, and then allow them to use the rest of their income on different things throughout a week or a month. Meals might cost a dollar, using the shower could cost 50 cents… by making your child pay for everything they use, you can teach them the importance of money and saving it.

Cooking skills

Every child one day needs to learn to cook. Teaching your child some essential skills in the kitchen such as how to tell when chicken is cooked, how to cook pasta, and how to make a simple pizza dough will be valuable later in their life. Spend time every day teaching your child simple kitchen skills and allow them to gain some confidence in the kitchen with you.

Laundry

Let’s face it, we all want to teach our kids how to do the laundry for us! If you have a young child who has never used the washing machine or hung washing out on the line: now is the time to teach them. It is a skill they will need in their own home, and it is also a good excuse to avoid doing it yourself!

DIY

Changing a lightbulb, wallpapering a wall, painting without getting paint everywhere… all of these things need to be taught to your child. While in lockdown it’s the perfect time to get some housework done and carry out some renovation, so why not bring your child along and let them get involved with it all?

Gardening

If your child is ever going to own their own house, they need to know how to look after their garden. Gardening can be a fun hobby and many adults don’t even know all there is to know about it. However, you can teach your child simple things such as the names of plants, what to look for in weeds, and how to prune large shrubs and trees without damaging them.
