Home Renovations You Should Never Do Yourself

Home Renovations You Should Never Do Yourself from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

After years of watching HGTV and YouTube tutorials, I like to think of myself as something of a DIY goddess. While I have become pretty handy with a power drill, I know some tasks are still just a bit outside my wheelhouse. Even with Chip and Joanna Gaines by my side, I think there are some DIY projects I’m better off leaving to the pros. To help you avoid some of the trial and error I endured (and believe me, y’all, there was a lot!), I’ve compiled a brief list of three home renovations you should never do yourself.

Plumbing

Tiny leaks may not seem like such a big deal, but they’re often indicative of a much larger problem. Without the proper know-how, trying to stop a leaky faucet or a faulty drain can easily lead to an accidental flood in your kitchen. As such, it’s always best to contact a licensed contractor for home renovations repairs. They’ll be able to tell if your leaky faucet is just a front for a deeper-rooted issue. Contacting a plumber is not only crucial when fixing existing issues but also when installing new plumbing and appliances. When renovating a bathroom or kitchen, it’s always best to have a professional plumber on hand. They will help install all appliances correctly and make sure that they work seamlessly with all existing plumbing.

Roofing

Perhaps the biggest home renovation that you should never do yourself is roofing. Not only is this an extremely labor-intensive and exhausting task, but it can be quite dangerous when not handled by a professional. Scaling a roof and laying down tiles is a task you should leave to those who have the proper training. The last thing you want is your spouse dangling off the side of the roof after a particularly slippery fall. Even small repairs such as the removal of damaged shingles or the replacement of a missing shingle will be safer in the hands of a professional. Be sure to shop around when looking for a roofing contractor to ensure you get the best deal possible. You may not save as much money as doing things yourself, but you will save a lot of time, energy, and trouble in the future if you enlist the help of a professional.

Electrical work

As with plumbing, electrical work may seem like a small and simple fix at first, but if completed incorrectly, it can lead to big problems. Installing lighting fixtures is usually okay to DIY, but you should enlist the help of a professional if you will be moving or rewiring electrical outlets and light switches. You don’t want to accidentally short your power, and contacting a licensed electrician is the best way to avoid this.
