The Best Gifts For An Elderly Relative

Finding the right gift for an elderly loved one can be difficult. It seems that more often than not older relatives stop asking for things for birthdays and other special occasions. They may feel they don’t really need anything, they may prioritize family time or a nice meal, or they may simply not want to burden you. But you still want to find the perfect gift! This results in a common conundrum: an important birthday or holiday is approaching for a beloved family member, and you have no idea what to get.

Often, the best solution is to find or design something personal. But there are also a lot of gifts that are ideal for elderly individuals, in that they can provide the kind of comfort, convenience, and even independence that sometimes begins to disappear in old age. We can’t list all of them here, but there are at least a few that come to mind.

A New Pillow

It sounds about as simple as can be, but it’s a reasonably priced gift, and something your family member might actually quite enjoy trying out. Again, comfort can begin to disappear in old age, or it can at least be a little harder to come by. So why not try something new? Memory foam is the first option that comes to mind for a lot of people, though a water pillow can also be an interesting alternative. Both of these options offer a somewhat personalized feel that may be better than a lot of elderly individuals are used to.

Shower Grab Bars

It’s something you’ll probably never think of until someone older actually mentions it to you, but something like getting in and out of the shower can become perilous at a certain age. Bathroom surfaces can be slippery (particularly when there’s water flowing), and a hard fall can lead to serious medical problems. For these reasons, shower grab bars can actually be very thoughtful and helpful gifts. In some cases, they can simply be stuck onto the walls wherever they’re needed to provide a little bit of extra support.

A Walk-In Tub

It’s a little bit more of an investment, but a walk in bathtub is a step up from shower grab bars, particularly for a senior who has already had significant mobility issues. You might be surprised how easily a walk in tub can be installed in a bathroom, and with it your elderly family member will be able to simply take a seat and let a bath fill up. In some cases, there are even jets involved, which means it could be the most comfortable and relaxing home bath he or she has ever had!

An Induction Cooktop

This might sound a little bit obscure, but it’s actually a popular choice for a gift for a senior. An induction cooktop is essentially one in which the cooktop doesn’t heat up, and in some cases, it will also turn off automatically if a pot or pan is not on top of it. These features solve a few problems. They make it more difficult for someone to burn himself by mistake, and they also make it harder to leave a burner on by mistake, either due to forgetfulness or preoccupation. It’s a safe choice, but one that also shows your family member you think he or she should keep on cooking!

A Tablet

Finally, a touchscreen tablet can be a perfect gift, provided you’re around to help your family member learn how to use it. Often, senior family members want better ways of staying in touch with their children and grandchildren, and a tablet can provide just that. Whether through chat, video chat, or email, or even the sharing of pictures, a tablet can be a sort of lifeline to the rest of the family.Hopefully a few of these ideas sound right for the senior you’re thinking about. Best of luck finding that perfect gift!
