4 Chore Ideas For Your Kids To Earn An Allowance

Showing your kids the value of earning something rather than giving everything to them is a great way to prepare them for their adult lives.  Often parents want to give their children everything they never had thinking that it will somehow improve their lives, however without appreciating the value of something, they will never know its worth.

Chores are a great way to start teaching kids how to follow through with their responsibilities in order to have money to buy things for themselves.  However, some parents aren’t sure exactly what kind of chores to give their kids.  Of course, ideally, their chores would be making them driving you to work, or doing your taxes, but these aren’t exactly things that a 10-year-old is capable of.

Here are some of the best ideas for chores to give your kids that aren’t too difficult but will still teach them the importance of earning their way in life.

 Setting and Clearing The Table

Dinner time is a ritual which many families do as a group every night.  Studies show that families who dine together have fewer conflicts and closer relationships as the children grow up.

Involving your children in the process of dinner time is a great opportunity to give them some responsibilities.  Setting the table is not only a great option for a chore, but they can start to have fun with choosing placemats, arranging the cutlery, and placing creative centerpieces.

In addition to setting the table, clearing the table can also be part of their chore.  All of the dishes should be clear and stacked up in the kitchen following a meal, as well as the table properly wiped down.

 Filling The Dishwasher

Once upon a time, there were no such things as dishwashers.  Cleaning up after a meal was something that could take up to an hour scrubbing and rinsing and drying.

With the convenience of a dishwasher which merely needs to be filled and turned on, this makes a great chore for younger children.

Vacuuming

Vacuuming is something that is incredibly necessary when you have kids around.  It seems that crumbs seem to accumulate in a matter of seconds when you have little ones in the household.

Teaching kids to use a vacuum cleaner isn’t only useful to you as a parent, but the kids usually enjoy using one since it’s almost like a big electronic toy.

Walking The Dog

Dogs require a lot of walking if you are a responsible pet owner which is the perfect opportunity to delegate this task to the kids.

A daily walk with the dog is a great chore to add to a kids daily routine.

  1. It is so important for kids to be a part of the chores around the house. I have always had my boys be a part of the chores. When they were really little, I had them help clean up their toys. It has grown from there. All my boys have chores everyday and almost always have. It is very good to let them be a part of keeping the home clean.
