Carbsteady With this Pina Colada Glucerna

If there is one thing that I have found out since I married my husband who happens to be from a big Hispanic family,he is number 9 of 10, is that they love dulces (sweet stuff) and basically food in general. When we visit Mexico desayuno (breakfast) is normally a piece of pan (sweet bread) and a drink. They consider that a snack until the next meal which is normally around 10 am. And then we eat again at 2 and then again around 8 or 9 at night. I think we eat more while we are on a week-long vacation in Mexico than we do during the weeks we are at home. Especially when it comes to breakfast. Diabetes runs in both sides of our familia (family) so we know we have to be careful of what we eat. And in fact, my husband has to watch what he eats because he is prediabetic.

raul love him (1)

Did you know that he is not alone and that an estimated 57 million people are prediabetic in the United States and that 35% of those are estimated to be Hispanic people?

That is why it is so important to raise diabetes awareness in the Latino community. Skipping breakfast or lunch is not a way to avoid diabetes. And although we aren’t big breakfast eaters we have found that if we don’t start our day off with a little something- problems often ensue. Headaches is one that I can name right off the top of my head. So we have had to look at ways that we can eat and go aka eat on the run. We have tried a lot of things but sometimes the flavors of those eat on the go items are just plain bland.

Glucerna Collage

So one day while I was shopping for ibuprofen in the Walmart pharmacy aisle , I turned around and found I was also in the aisle with the  Glucerna products. I decided to take a look at the products and it was almost like a bell went off in my head.

Why not create breakfast recipes for  on the go eating using these Carbsteady products? Carbsteady helps to minimize the spikes in our sugar levels. I thought why not create a breakfast smoothie with a Glucerna shake as the base. After all Glucerna helps satisfy hungers without the spike in levels that most shakes can bring. And they come in a variety of flavors. They are great for not only maintaining your levels but also help if you are watching your weight. And every Glucerna product had Carbsteady or Carbsteady Ultra which are designed to help minimize sugar levels. Not sure exactly what it this means check out this Steady Ahead Video.

So with that in mind, I grabbed a four pack of their awesome vanilla shakes to make smoothies for my family. I then thought to myself what flavor do most Hispanics like and then it came to me why not make a Piña Colada Smoothie. And that is exactly what I did. I also grabbed a package of Glucerna’s Nutrition Chocolate Chip Bars to sprinkle on top of the smoothies. For those of us in our family that need their chocolate fix.

This smoothie was so yummy that I decided to share it with you!!

  1. I think the protein/carb balance is something a lot of us struggle with. I’m not much of a meat eater and can’t stand eggs so I find myself reaching for protein shakes and bars a lot. Way to get a little creative and put one of those shakes to good use.
