When You Need a Career Change, Start Here
Life has a way of showing you what you want, even if you do not quite know what it is just yet, especially in regard to your work. Maybe you have been in the same job or career field and feel bored lately. Or perhaps you like what you do, but you want more out of it. Whatever the reason for wanting something else or something more in your professional life, you need to be the catalyst for the change you want to see. Continue reading to learn how you can make it happen.
Enhance Your Current Skill Set
Working in a career field that has given you great purpose and fulfilled you both personally and professionally is amazing. One such career field is nursing for example. Maybe you have been in the same silo for a while, know everything there is to know about it, but still enjoy the care you provide to others. When you feel like you need a change, you can always continue in the same career field – just move over to a different track.
To further the nursing example, you should look into something more intensive, such as becoming a critical care transport nurse. Nurses work in a variety of settings, including the transportation of patients. Your expertise will continue to serve people in need while allowing you to expand your current skill set and do more with it.
Talk with Your Employer
If you enjoy your company, co-workers, and the work you do, but are ready for more of a challenge, it might be time to schedule a sit-down meeting with your supervisor. It is important to go into this meeting to discuss your future with the company as prepared as possible.
Start by updating your resume to include your current position. While you do not need to pull this document out during the meeting, it might come in handy. The most important thing you can do is to clearly and concisely document everything you have done for the company. Include projects, data points, success rates, etc. Print enough copies for everyone in the room plus two more, just in case others attend. Finally, prepare your pitch. Practice what you want to say so you will be confident in the moment. Remember, you need to be your own cheerleader and advocate. It is not bragging. It is highlighting your worth and pointing out that you are an asset to the company.
Finding the right job is not always easy. It takes time, a shift, and sometimes, a little bit of soul searching to figure out what your next chapter will be. If you want to stay the course in your current field of work, it is usually possible. However, you can enhance your experience by shifting to a different pathway while learning something new. Beyond that, talk with your employer. Meet with your supervisor. Sell your value and show them what you add to the company and why you are an asset that they should invest in. Get that promotion or cross-train to a different department. There are options available for you; all you have to do is try.
