Tips for Driving Safely with Kids

Tips for Driving Safely with Kids from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

As spring break approaches, I’m discovering more and more how important it is for me and my family to set out on an adventure. Unfortunately, my kids won’t be little forever, and it’s important that I take the time to experience new things with them and create memories that will last a lifetime. The only catch is that we’d need to get there first. If your children are anything like mine, extended car rides can mean trouble and stress—making it crucial that we’re equipped with a few tips for driving safely with kids.

Follow Proper Seating Arrangements

Though my kids routinely fight over who gets to ride up front, I put an extra bit of effort into ensuring that they all end up in their proper seats. Anyone under 12 years old has to sit in the back and anyone younger than 10 needs to be secured in their car seat. Not only does this keep everyone in place and safe, but it also gives me some peace of mind.

Don’t Get Distracted

I’ll be the first to admit that my phone is at the center of many of my daily activities. Between work, grocery lists, and chats with family, a lot of my time is spent responding to messages and other responsibilities. However, behind the wheel, I try my best to avoid common driving distractions by putting my phone away and keeping my focus on the road rather than my screaming kids.

Secure All Belongings

If it’s not tied down, I can always count on my kids to be playing with something they shouldn’t be. This is especially the case when we’re on a road trip and they’re looking for ways to ease their boredom. But, letting our luggage slide around in back is a sure way to get someone hurt. So, before we leave, I always try to position items correctly to keep them from sliding and tie them down so my kids can’t reach them while I’m driving. So do you have any other tips for driving safely with kids?
