Tips for Designing a Kid’s Playroom on a Budget

Tips for Designing a Kids Playroom on a Budget from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

Hey, y’all! If you’re like me, you struggle to find a balance between all the adorable kids’ products they make nowadays, and you tend to go a little crazy on the budget when getting anything for your children. When we decided to convert our spare bedroom into your kids playroom, my husband was very adamant about sticking to a budget, as we both tend to buy first and check the price later when it comes to our little ones. We were so amazed at how easy it was to stick to the budget by just staying conscious about practicality over aesthetics. I listed my favorite tips for designing your kids playroom on a budget to help you out.

Practicality over Personality

While I love, love, love a room that displays my or my children’s personality, it’s important to keep in mind that kids’ interests change constantly. My youngest was super into ballet up until her fifth birthday, and suddenly, it’s all unicorns all the time. As tempting as it is to go all out on the zoo animal theme because your little guy just loves giraffes today, it may go stale quickly as soon as he finds out about the solar system. Just keep it neutral and cute! Use color as an accent instead of a theme, or go with a general theme that won’t get outdated quickly.

In addition, as cute as those little kid armchairs might be (my heart melts every time I walk past them at the store), you must resist! Kids sprout up quicker than the blink of an eye, and they’ll outgrow those teeny tiny chairs in no time. Instead, invest in a couch they can use in their rooms, or create a lounge room when they reach those dreaded teen years. I don’t like to think about my sweet little angels rolling their eyes and hiding in their bedrooms either, but we all know it’s coming. For now, since little ones are messy—especially my daughter and her passion for glitter glue— cover-up that couch with a slipcover that fits well to protect it from spills, paint, and other random stains that seem to appear when my kids enter a room.

Organize

Organization can seem impossible, as cleaning up is the hardest thing in the world for a young child to accomplish. I like to encourage my kids to clean up what they played with before getting something else out; of course, this rarely works out as I plan. Once I got a good organizational system in place, though, they started to remember where toys go. Plus, they can read the labels on their storage bins to find toys they want, which cuts down on digging through bottomless bins.
