Small Ways To Make the House Smell Good

The new year is finally upon us, everyone! For me, that means it’s time to take another look around the house and figure out what is and isn’t working. One of my favorite ways to get into a season change is to brighten up the smells around the house. A little change like that can have a lot of impact on how you feel—I know I wake up feeling ready to go when things smell welcoming and fresh. There’s a lot of small ways to make the house smell good, and I usually like to mix up my options.

Clear Out the Old

The first step to really make a difference in the home is to do the plain old due diligence and clean. Make sure there isn’t anything hanging around contributing bad smells. Take out the trash, wipe everything down, and remove all the stinky gunk you can find. Adding a little aroma oil or using scented cleaners on the rugs and floors can kick-start the process, too!

Cover the Basics

Now that all the bad-smelling stuff is out of the way, let’s start adding in good smells with new habits. One thing I like to do is stealthily add good smells everywhere I know there’s going to be bad ones. Putting air fresheners in high-traffic areas is always a good start. Scented disinfectants and dish soaps will also gradually create good-smelling ambience. Lastly, tricks such as using scented garbage can liners stop stinks right at the source.

Strategically Place Candles

One of the best small ways to make the house smell good is to carefully place candles. They’re great decorations on their own, and even when they’re not lit, they still smell pretty nice. In addition to the larger ones, I also like to hide smaller ones in each room just for the scents. Lighting them up smells even better, of course, and candles clear bad smells out of the air on their own. Plus, having a little downtime in soft candlelight is really relaxing.

Use Scented Cleaners

Besides another round of scrubbing, there’s a lot of little ways y’all can add some good aromas into your habits. For instance, when you go to perfume up a bit, give the room a spritz, too. Another one of my favorite ways to treat myself and keep the house smelling good is using scented soaps. They’re great for pampering hands, and after a bit, the whole bathroom starts to smell like them. Putting air fresheners near high-traffic areas reminds me to occasionally fire them off, too.
