6 Tips for Enjoying Your Deck in the Fall

6 Tips for Enjoying Your Deck in the Fall

Summer steals the show when it comes to our decks. However, fall is a favorite time of year for many of us. We love the slight chill in the air and crunchy leaves under our feet. So grab your favorite pumpkin spice anything, and let’s talk about my six tips for enjoying your deck in the fall.

Don’t Cover the Furniture Yet

Personally, when summer is wrapping up, I get a little anxious to prep everything for the colder months. I love to get my to-do list taken care of well ahead of time. Still, I hold off on covering my outdoor furniture until Jack Frost makes it very clear he’s here to stay. There’s plenty of time yet for sitting outside.

Take the Chill Off

Fall is a great excuse to pull out our favorite sweaters and wrap up in a blanket on the deck at night. Even with those extra layers, as the months progress, we need a heat source to enjoy evenings out there. Here are a few heat source ideas for y’all:

Space Heater

Space heaters are portable and run using natural gas, propane, or electricity. These little things don’t take up much space and radiate heat up to 20 feet. That’s enough to keep your toes toasty.

Fire Pit

Nothing says autumn like s’mores over the fire pit. Today, there are several different types of fire pits, which makes it possible for everyone to find the right one for their deck and lifestyle. Fire pits offer the most heat and are great when you’ve got extra guests joining you.

Tabletop Heater

A tabletop heater only covers about a seven-foot radius. That’s not necessarily a bad thing if there’s only one or two of you. They usually run with propane and are a simple way to throw a little heat your way.

Outdoor String Lights

These little beauties have become all the rage for a good reason. Hanging outdoor string lights around the deck tells people it’s there to enjoy. Those soft lights are welcoming on fall evenings. I prefer the vintage-style ones that look like old lightbulbs, but there are many styles to choose from.

More and more people are becoming eco-conscious, which is probably why solar-powered lighting and other devices are so popular these days. Solar post cap lights can be great additions to your deck posts. Not only do they save power and are easy to install, but they can also add to the soft, dreamy ambiance of your outdoor space without costing you much.

Keep Grilling

Keep the fuel flowing because grill season has announced an extension into the fall. Make use of outdoor cooking beyond the summer. With the cooler temps, grilling is more pleasurable than it is in the summer. No sweat required.

Keep It Clean

Fall leaves fall, and they land on your deck. Keep a broom handy for quick cleanup each day so that you can enjoy the deck anytime.

Mums and Pumpkins Please

Yes, it’s pumpkin spice latte time, but it’s also time to decorate for fall! I don’t think fall gets enough credit for its level of adorableness when it comes to decorating. Set a few pumpkins and some potted mums around the deck, and you’ve got cozy central.

I get a bit excited about fall, but can you blame me? After a long, hot summer, I welcome the cooler temperatures, outdoor fires, and gooey marshmallows on a stick. Try my six tips for enjoying your deck in the fall, and get outside before old man winter locks us in.
