Repurpose, Reuse, Recycle Judging at the Wayne County Fair

I am honored every year that I get to judge the 3R category at our local fair. I know you probably thinking what is the 3Rs? It simply stands for Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle. The entries in this category are all about giving new life to something that would normally be discarded. And if you have followed the blog for any amount of time, you know this is right up my alley.

I always come away from judging with a new sense of purpose and a project or two I want to create for the house. One of my favorite recreations from attending the fair is my pig planter. We saw one made out of a plastic bottle and fell in love. When we got home, it took some time but my husband was able to recreate it from metal scraps so it would last a while and it does. It is by far my favorite piece he has made me.

But enough about my pig, let me tell you about the fair judging. I did walk away with a few ideas about things to do but honestly this year, it just seemed like the entries were a repeat of things I had seen in the past. You know the standard things you see on Pinterest, like a dog bed made out of a drawer

But there were a few things that stand out, like the bench made from the tailgate of Old Chevrolet pickup truck, An American Flag made from ribbons from the past participants at the fair, and a wind chime made from all garden tools.

But this year, I guess since Gracie is big into painting. I was more focused on the unusual things that people painted. Not sure what I am talking about, well let me explain, Gracie doesn’t like just painting on Canvas, she is always looking for new things to paint. She painted her closet door with scenes from famous paintings and she even painted an old 45 record she found at a thrift store.

So with that in the back of my mind, I noticed those things. There were paintings done on old windows, a ceiling fan blade and probably the hardest thing of all to paint a window screen. I was really impressed with that one. ( Imagine making sure that the paint or marker, not sure which medium they used to create it doesn’t go through all those tiny holes in the screen.)

All in all, I really enjoyed getting to judge the fair again this year and I look forward to doing it again in the future. I always come away from judging saying that I am going to enter next year, and then totally forget about it. Why do you ask? Because I tend to forget about the fair until it comes around again and I think the same thing. I know the endless circle continues right. Maybe next year I will remember.
