The American dream is slowly becoming a thing of the past, slowly going just beyond the reach of most Americans. But it doesn’t have to be, just look at the results about the American dream that was were gathered through MassMutual’s State of the Family Study. Here is what Americans are placing as priorities.

1. Putting family first

2. Being actively involved in household financial decisions

3. Educating children about money

4. Making sure that children aren’t burdened by parents’ care as they age.

My personal version of the American Dream is not that different from others.

  • Owning a House- Check
  • Having the 2.5 kids (opps 3) – Check
  • 2 Parent Family- Check
  • Not living from paycheck to paycheck – have not realized this dream yet but I am working on it. My husband and I are achieving this dream by working hard at two jobs. We both have fulltime jobs and well as part time jobs as well. His fulltime job is as a mechanic at a John Deere place and he works part time 3 days a week at a local golf course. My full time job is blogging, because this is a job that I never stop doing and my part time job is teaching. We hope to one day retire knowing that working two jobs was not in vain.
  • Having all three girls go to college – 1 down 2 more to go
  • Being Happily Married- Check
  • Being able to have relatives come visit anytime they want. – This one has not been achieved because immigration laws are so strict. It is sad that my girls’ abuelos (Grandparents) cannot come to visit them because of these laws.

My dream is not so different from the dreams of my parents. But as for the dreams of my girls- they have big dreams and written out plans for their lives. MassMutual can help families achieve their American dream today. By visiting here, you can better understand your family’s finances.
