Is Your Roof in Need of Repairs? Here’s What Texas Homeowners Should Know
Following the recent storms that swept through the Houston area, many homeowners are now looking for reliable contractors to handle roof repairs and other home damage. It’s important to remember that under current Texas law, roofing contractors are not required to hold a state license.
So far, more than $21 million in individual assistance loans have been approved for Houston-area residents affected by severe weather. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds can help cover essential home repairs— such as roofing, plumbing, utilities, windows, and doors.
Homeowners, particularly in nearby communities like Sugar Land, who are dealing with storm damage or urgent roof leaks, are encouraged to work with established local contractors. Companies like Madison Roofing, known for professional roof repair services in Sugar Land, have been part of ongoing recovery efforts, assisting residents with timely residential roof repairs after extreme weather events.
Advice for Homeowners from Industry Experts
Mike Dishberger, a member of the Board of Directors at the Greater Houston Builders Association, offered two key recommendations for homeowners seeking trustworthy roofing services.
1. Check References and Credentials
If someone approaches you offering roofing services, Dishberger suggests starting with a quick online search to verify their background.
“Make sure they’re the real deal,” he said. “Unfortunately, after storms, there are always scammers who take deposits and never return — or do poor-quality work.”
Dishberger explained that reputable contractors often belong to professional organizations, which helps demonstrate their credibility and commitment to industry standards. These memberships also make it easier for customers to reach them later if issues arise.
“These groups, including ours, aim to help contractors improve how they operate and serve customers,” Dishberger noted.
Homeowners can also consult the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which provides reviews and allows customers to file complaints about member businesses. Although the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation does not currently require a license for roofing contractors, some professionals voluntarily become certified through the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT).
It’s also helpful to ask neighbors or local friends who they’ve used for recent roof repairs.
2. Avoid Paying Cash or the Full Amount Upfront
While some contractors may ask for a partial payment before starting, Dishberger cautions against paying the entire amount until the job is finished.
“I’d recommend using a check or credit card instead of cash,” he said.
He added that reputable roofing companies are typically transparent about pricing and may even suggest homeowners contact their insurance provider before proceeding.
“A good contractor might say, ‘Your roof probably needs replacement, but check with your insurance company first to confirm,’” he explained.
