Guest Post: That Dream Vacation Is on the Horizon

It probably has been quite a while since you’ve had a relaxing summer vacation. The little ones are home from school again for a couple months, and they’re so carefree they’re actually bored. If they’ve been complaining that there’s nothing to do, you’ve probably spent some time thinking about getting them (and yourself!) out of the house, maybe to visit a different city or a different state, or just to spend some time outdoors together. Chances are good your own personal and professional life has been a distraction: a full-time job (or two), personal fitness, and everything else really can really add up and start to make you feel like you’ll never get to take that dream vacation of yours. Maybe you’re finding it hard to think about planning a vacation if money has been a little bit tight lately.

Thankfully, help is on the way. There are a lot of creative ways to earn and save this summer. Some might even surprise you. By earning a little bit of supplemental income this summer, or just by saving some money on the household expenses you’re already paying, you can start saving up for that family trip you’ve always wanted. Here are four great ways to get you started.

Haircut

You may never have thought about selling a part of your body before, but this one’s pretty painless. There are a lot of businesses out there that pay top dollar for healthy hair. You could make a couple of hundred dollars if your hair is long enough! Think about that: during all those trips to the salon over the years, you’ve literally been leaving money on the floor.

Piggy Bank

They’re not just for kids anymore. By keeping a change jar around the house, it’s easy to watch money add up right before your eyes. Instead of keeping change around the house in so many places you eventually forget where you left it all, keeping your change in a central location is a great motivator to keep saving. Best of all, you don’t even have to roll it yourself: take it to the nearest CoinStar machine and have it counted for you.

Why Buy When You Can Borrow?

If you’re like most people, you’ve occasionally bought a tool or something else for around the house that you needed for a project, but may never have used again. If this sounds like you, consider borrowing or renting next time there’s a project that you need to finish. Plenty of websites offer great selections of household items that you can rent for cheap. Now you can get things done around the house without breaking the bank or cluttering up your house with things you’ll only use once.

Dog Boarding

Are you an animal lover? If so, this one’s for you! Chances are good you have some friends with dogs who don’t like to board them at a kennel. If you know anybody who wants a more personal touch when it comes to their dogs, offer to look after the dogs yourself by dog boarding. It’s a great way to spend some personal time with some animals during the summer, stay fit walking them, and bring in some extra cash!

If you follow just a couple of these tips for saving and making money this summer, you’ll be able to save up a nice little vacation fund for yourself and the kids. Everybody needs a change of scenery now and then, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Get saving!
