Different Kinds of Disorders Dogs Can Have

Puppies are furry family members, y’all. I treat my dogs as if they were my children. For this reason, I hate when they’re sick—it makes my heart hurt. Here are a few different kinds of disorders dogs can have so that you’ll know the signs to watch out for.

Heartworm

Heartworm is a disease that wreaks havoc on your dog’s blood vessel and heart. It’s transferred by pesky mosquitos—sometimes, they’ll bite Fido and cause an infection within their blood. Luckily, there are some ways to prevent this. Start by getting a few different medications that can prevent heartworm. If your doggo has heartworm already, take it to the vet right away to start a steroid regimen.

Sleep Disorders

Puppies are cutest when they’re sleeping. Unfortunately, your duties as a pet owner don’t slow down when your dog is resting. There are common sleep disorders in dogs that y’all should be aware of so that Fido stays safe while resting:

  • Sleep apnea is common in flat-nosed dogs because they can’t breathe through their nasal passages. Speak to your vet about how to stop the snoring that comes along with this condition.
  • REM behavior disorder is essentially sleepwalking. Fortunately, vets can prescribe something to alleviate the symptoms.
  • There’s no cure for narcolepsy; however, you can comfort your dog when they randomly fall asleep. Essentially, their brain sends them mixed signals about when it’s time to sleep, so you can comfort them by waking them up gently.

These are a few different kinds of disorders that dogs can have. Learning about these conditions will make you a better pet owner so that you can help them when they’re in need. Y’all, keep an open line of communication with your vet so that they’re ready if anything goes wrong. Also, don’t forget to exercise Fido and feed it healthy food to keep it in great shape.
