Creating A Living Memorial

Our lives were changed quite drastically when our nephew was killed. Sure it was 25 but still he will always be a little kid to me. If you are new to the blog or just need a little refresher read about his loss here and here. That said we wanted to make a memorial worthy of his larger than life smile and life. So this how we made a low-cost memorial makes us laugh when we see it.

The start of the memorial was to buy a tree. We wanted a tree that will stay green for the majority of the year and bloom for two seasons. We chose a crepe myrtle. When buying a tree check and make sure you get one with a warranty. We planted the tree and then put some black landscaping material around it and added the rocks and the bricks.

Here we are spreading the rocks out. Even Beary got to help out with this job.

Mikaela, Gracie and Beary adding the finishing touches.

Raul is telling the girls how big he thinks the tree will get.

We added a little angel for Victor. Looks good right but we are not done yet.

The finished product on day 1.

As you see in this picture the angel got a seat. His seat is a clay pot that we painted black. The girls can write messages on it or as I have found they put little notes underneath the pot.

It started to bloom a week ago. I know you are probably thinking to yourself what is that Pepsi bottle is doing there. Well, Victor could never say Pepsi right so we will always remember him for that. But the Pepsi bottle is not plastic it is made of concrete.

Basically, Raul took a Pepsi bottle and filled it with concrete mix.

He waited for it to set and then cut the plastic from around it.

He has a metal rod running up through the bottle to keep it standing upright.

Cool right. Difficult to believe it is concrete.

Mikaela then added this rosary around the angel’s neck. The bricks are a little bit different as well. We thought the rounded concrete ones looked better.

The finished product here and

and last I want to leave you with a up close shot of the blooms from the tree.

Beautiful right. This was a wonderful way for us to remember a wonderful person who made us smile. We love you, Victor Raul.
