Building a Modern Kitchen

It used to be that when you had a kitchen in the home or even in the vicinity of a home, it was dingy, smokey, and the owners of the house rarely set foot in the space. These days though a kitchen is very different. For some people, it’s a place where they can relax and unwind, for others it’s a place they can test out new recipes and entertain. No matter what you use your kitchen space for its important that it be comfortable, efficient, and functional. Modern kitchens are by far the most common design for kitchens. They tend to have sleek designs, beautiful flooring, and countertops, and they offer all of the creature comforts you would want in a kitchen. If you are interested in creating a modern kitchen space, below are a few factors you should be looking into.

The Work Triangle

This is a real thing. Essentially in laymen terms it’s a triangle that is made between the sink, the fridge, and the cooking range. It doesn’t have to be an equal triangle, though. In modern kitchens, the point is to create a triangle between these three spots so that you can have a compact enough space to allow for convenient cooking, but it also allows people to be in the kitchen at once without bumping into each other. The triangle workspace shouldn’t intersect with things like the cabinets or countertops or even an island. The general rule of thumb states that the sum of all 3 sides of the triangle should be no less than 15′ and no more than 25′.

Choosing The Right Modern Appliances

Modern appliances are amazing these days, they add in convenience and efficiency so that after a hard days work you can come home and quickly make dinner for yourself or your family without wasting hours in the kitchen. Some modern appliances to consider;

GE monogram Advantium: This little gadget is about as cool as it gets. It has FOUR methods of cooking wrapped into one appliance. You can speed-cook, convection oven, microwave and warm.

Kitchen Aid Mixers: I love these things! You can make breads, pasta, cakes, pies, ice cream and everything else in between with just a few different attachments. It should also be noted that fresh pasta takes less time to cook than the dried stuff. Super-efficient.

Sink With Built in Dishwasher: This is a good option for smaller kitchens. One side is the sink, the other “basin” is the dishwasher.

Another option to consider for modern kitchens and appliances is the material. Modern kitchens tend to use a lot of stainless steel (silver in color) but some manufacturers have started to make stainless steel in black as well. If you like modern design but you want a splash of color, you can also find an array of appliances in colors – a pink stove top, a red microwave, or even a blue fridge.

Lighten Up Your Kitchen With Lighting

Lighting is actually multi-functional. It helps you see, yes, but it also sheds ambient light onto your kitchen you worked so hard to create. Without light, all those design options you meticulously picked out will simply fall flat. One of the really great aspects about modern lighting is that it is one of the cheapest elements in a kitchen. When it comes to the kitchen you can use up to 3 types of lighting. Consider; pendant lights above the island, smaller lights under the counters or cabinets, recessed lighting above where you are cooking or preparing foods and ambient light with a dimmer switch in an eat-in kitchen. The point to adding different types of lighting is to add depth and layering. You should have; ambient light to set the mood, task lighting for things like cooking and cutting and accent lighting – playing off of things in the room you want to highlight. Ambient could be something simple like pendant lights or a chandelier, task lighting would be something like under the cabinet lighting or recessed lights and accent lighting could be a sconce on either side of the wall to showcase a specific item. There are actually websites online that will allow you to choose a space like yours, and then add in different lighting options so you can see what the end project would look like.

Trends are great to use, but at the end of the day, your modern kitchen should BE what you need it to be. If you want to cook like crazy, have proper lighting and the best appliances and tools at your fingertips. If you want to entertain and have sit down dinners, have proper lighting and a space you can be proud of that fits your style and your mode of entertainment. It is your kitchen after all, and with these modern kitchen ideas, you can sure to improve your home value by adding modernization.
