4 Helpful Resources for Homeschooling Families in 2021

4 Helpful Resources for Homeschooling Families in 2021 from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

Homeschooling is an exciting, alternative option to public and private schools. Parents have had to take control of their children’s education during COVID, amidst nationwide school closures. Now that they’ve seen the benefits of homeschooling firsthand, many plan to continue to homeschool in the future.  Whether a family is brand new to homeschooling or has been doing it for years, they will find these four resources for homeschooling to be helpful.

Homeschool Legal Defense Association

If you are brand new to homeschooling, your first stop should be the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HLDA) website. But don’t let their name fool you. This advocacy group does more than help homeschoolers with legal matters.

HLDA is an informative resource that will help you understand and abide by your state’s specific homeschool regulations. Their website also covers topics such as special needs learners, how to create a high school transcript, and more. Paid membership in HLDA provides more intensive support and guidance.

Other Homeschoolers

Other families who homeschool their children can lend you support, advice, and friendship. You can search for and connect with other homeschoolers in your area via social media, your local public library, place of worship, or community center. There are countless online groups and forums, as well.

Connecting with other local homeschoolers has practical advantages, as well. You can swap curriculum, save on supplies by buying in bulk, and even arrange field trips at a discounted rate.

Remember that homeschoolers are as diverse as the general population. You may not “click” with or be interested in the first group of homeschoolers that you meet, and that is okay. Keep looking, or even consider forming your own homeschool group.

Books, books, and more books…

There are a lot of online learning resources today. They have their benefits, but so do books. Nothing will ever replace holding an actual book in your hand! If you don’t already have a library card, be sure to get one. Most libraries can order books that they don’t already have on their shelves.

Buying books online is also convenient. Be sure to check out auction sites like eBay for some amazing deals. You can also use the purchasing power of your fellow homeschoolers by buying homeschooling books in bulk. When you purchase multiple copies of the same book, everybody saves.

Local Universities and Colleges

Homeschoolers who live near a university or college can benefit in many ways. College students may be available to teach or tutor any subjects that a parent may not feel comfortable with.

Some colleges that have an Education major offer free or low-cost art or physical education classes taught by student teachers. Classes like these are a great way for children to connect with others near their same age, and parents can enjoy a bit of a break.

Homeschool isn’t right for every family or even every child, but neither is the traditional school model. Families who want to give homeschooling a try have many resources available to them.
