Travel in the Southeast

Travel in the Southeast from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

Summer is a fantastic time to take a trip with the family, and spring is a perfect time to plan a vacation that you and your loved ones will remember for a long time. When you’re looking for fun places to go, don’t overlook the American Southeast. Places like Florida. New York and California are certainly fun, but they can also be overcrowded and expensive. There are other tourist destinations that offer a myriad of activities without making you feel quite as claustrophobic. Two underrated gems in this part of the country are Georgia, the Peach State, and Alabama, the Yellowhammer State.

Georgia

Atlanta is both the capital of Georgia and the state’s biggest city, so most visitors will probably want to start there. When you fly into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport a few miles south of downtown, you’ll be flying into the world’s busiest airport based on passenger traffic. It’s also the hub of Delta Airlines, which means if you’re on a Delta flight that goes through the eastern half of the country, there’s a decent chance you’ll be routed through Atlanta. In a city the size of Atlanta, you may not want to rent a car and have to deal with the traffic yourself, especially after a long flight. Look up airport transportation Atlanta and let the professionals take the wheel and get you safely to your hotel or rental house.

From Atlanta, it’s a short drive to the trendy college town of Athens. If you’re looking for a beach, you’ll need to drive about 250 miles to the Savannah area, but it’s worth the trip once you lay eyes on the breathtaking scenery of Tybee Island. Columbus, Georgia, is about 100 miles to the southwest. Stroll through downtown Columbus and take in the views of the Chattahoochee River, or go visit the National Infantry Museum. Columbus is a big military city since it’s located a few miles away from the Fort Benning Army base on the Georgia-Alabama border.

Alabama

Crossing the Chattahoochee River in Columbus lands you in Phenix City, Alabama. While all of Alabama officially resides in the Central Time Zone, many Phenix City residents use Eastern Time, especially if they commute across the river to jobs in Columbus. It can get confusing, but it gets less confusing the farther you get from the river. In fact, if you drive south towards the Florida coast, you’ll find yourself in the cozy country town of Dothan. There’s a ton to do in Dothan; so much that you’ll forget you’re in a place with only about 65,000 residents. Dothan residents are proud to live in the self-proclaimed “Peanut Capital of the World.” If you don’t believe it, visit during the National Peanut Festival in November. If you don’t like peanuts, then Dothan is brimming with other Southern staples including fried chicken, country fried steak, and Cajun food. Don’t forget to check out a live music show while you’re in town, especially if you’re a fan of country music. Nobody does country music like the South.
