To Homeschool or Not???

That is the question??? The other day I had coffee with a friend that I had not seen in awhile. It held a two fold purpose for me. One was just a chance to visit with an awesome friend. But the other reason is that my friend, Missy, home schools. She like me had children in public school but this year she decided to home school because of her oldest daughter’s health problems. (She has Ulcers!) Now this is a child in 4th grade. Yea, that’s right!! Ulcers!!!! I have to wonder what the public school system is doing to these children that they are being diagnosed for IBS and Ulcers in grades as low as 3rd and 4th grades. But that is a topic for another blog post.
The main reason I wanted to talk with this friend- was to get her take on homeschooling. She said that it was hard but also after this year- she knows she will never go back to public school again. She was a wealth of information – giving me books to read and websites to go to for research. She also gave me the name of the local home school group and who to contact.
I do not know if that is what I want to do yet with Gracie and Mikaela. But I am thankful that I had a friend that was willing to sit down with me and answer any questions that I might have had. She said I could call her anytime if I had anymore questions.
So now I post the question to you – Do you home school if so what has been your experience with it? I would love to hear about them.

  1. We homeschool and have been homeschooling since the beginning. My experience as been that it is difficult at times and not difficult at other times. No two curriculum are alike and just because something worked for one family or even child, doesn't mean it will work for all families or all your children.
Know your state law and join HSLDA are hands down most important!
I feel the first step is to determine how each of your children learn. After you have that figured out it's much easier to teach them how they need to be taught and you can take it a day at a time, a year at a time.
Of course we didn't learn any of this until we were half way though our first school year. I wouldn't change any of it though, not the bad days or temper tantrums we'd have when we struggled to understand each other in our new roles, not just as Mommy & son, but as teacher and student too. Each year has gotten better and I'm hoping this year (our 4th year) will be great. I wish you the best of luck, no matter what you choose! Also if you have any questions now or down the road, I'd be happy to help out in any way I can.
