The main types of filters to achieve higher water quality; but how clean is clean and what do you need?
Water does not conduct electricity. All the suspended or dissolved solids in the water allow electricity to jump through the water. Nuclear reactors use pure H2O around the core to remove heat and present no foreign material. A side note is, that we are now capturing that heat and recycling it for energy, not radiating it to the atmosphere. I think that’s a nice green change. I digress.
Unless you are a villain in a James Bond, Incredibles, or Marvel movie, you are unlikely to have a residential reactor filtration need. You can have an under-sink water purifier that provides the same purity for you and your family.
Everything we put in our bodies has to be filtered. How hard are you making your body systems work? Want them to last longer and function better? We have only a few minutes to define, what I consider, the six types of home water filtration. Ready?
- Sediment filters are a fibrous weave of various materials that present a low-micron mesh. Look for a less than 1-micron rating.
- If you have hard water issues from limestone, gypsum, or sulfates, a whole-house water softener system will save you tens of thousands of dollars on damages due to plaque build-up like hard arteries.
- Are you experiencing a sulfur or egg-like smell in your water? You can explore best sulfur removal system here. A charcoal filter can eliminate many tastes and odors. Regular testing will let you know when it is time to change.
- The bottled water we see on the shelves has one main filtration requirement, no microbial bacteria. Your tap water once passed through ultraviolet light, is bacteria free.
- Reverse osmosis (RO) uses a high-pressure vessel with thin-film membranes that sift the water with ultra-low micron purity from each layer. RO will remove all the above-mentioned issues, leaving you with very pure water.
- When RO is deionized (DI), it becomes nuclear pure. A DI vessel has bead-like resin statically charged to exchange water for any non-water ions. Pretty cool.
Other than water softeners, an under-sink or whole-house systems are available on all levels of filtration. It would not be cost-effective to have your entire home plumbed with drinking water, nor is it necessary to have a sediment filter at each faucet.
