Stop the Biting! 7 Ways to Kill Mosquitoes in Your Home

Tired of mosquitoes in and around your home? We listed seven ways to kill mosquitoes and get rid of them for good.

Mosquitos may be annoying, but did you know that they are the world’s deadliest creature?

Every year, mosquitoes kill at least 725,000 people. How? They transmit deadly diseases like Zika, malAria, and yellow fever.

Mosquitoes are more than just a bothersome pest, they’re a danger to your family. Keep reading to discover seven ways to kill mosquitoes and get rid of them for good.

1. Mosquito Control Spray

Asking yourself, “how do you get rid of mosquitoes?” Well instead of spraying on bug repellant and itching for days, use mosquito control spray to kill those pesky insects.

There are different sprays out there for every part of your yard. Head to your nearest home improvement store and find what’s best for you.

There are garden sprayers that you can use on both your landscaping elements and the siding of your home. If you really want to get the job done, try a mosquito fogger. These are electric or propane-powered sprayers that instantly kill any sign of an insect.

You can also use pesticides and insecticides to kill mosquitoes and other pests.

2. Larvicide

Another easy way to get rid of mosquitoes is by using larvicides.

Larvicides work by targeting mosquitoes in their larvae form before they ever mature to become the blood-sucking insects we all hate. They are similar to your mosquito control sprays but contain different chemical make-ups.

You can apply them the same way you do control sprays, by spraying the formula around your yard. They also come in pellets or tablets that can be placed in bodies of water.

3. Mosquito Zappers

Don’t like the idea of chemicals being around your family and pets? Opt for the good old-fashioned bug zapper.

Bug zappers work by first attracting mosquitos and other bugs to the device with fluorescent lights. When the insect enters the zapper, it completes the devices electric circuit. This causes a voltage to “zap” the bug, which kills and vaporizes it instantaneously.

Some people don’t like to use zappers because they kill any and all insects. While insects can be pests, they are important to our ecosystem.

4. Birds and Bats

If you want to go really natural, go higher up on the food chain.

Both birds and bats love to snack on mosquitoes, so build habitats for them around your yard and they’ll take care of the problem.

For bats, buy or build a bat house. Mount the house on a pole or the side of your home because mounting it in trees exposes your bats to predators. Many people fear bats and associate them with vampires, but they can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes every hour

For birds, all you need are a few bird feeders. Place different feeders around your yard and supply them with a few different bird feed varieties. Wait a few days and watch as your mosquito population dwindles.

Take this method a step further if you have ponds or other bodies of water in your yard. Purchase mosquito fish to eat larvae or frogs to eat mature mosquitos.

5. Mosquito Dunks

If your yard has a lot of water elements, you may think your fight against mosquitoes is useless. After all, standing water is the best breeding zone for mosquitoes  — so the more water, the more mosquitoes.

Enter mosquito dunks.

These handy little things work by releasing chemical water into standing water. But don’t worry if you have a pond with fish and other wildlife. Mosquito dunks are harmless to insects and creatures except for mosquitoes. This is what makes dunks different than larvicide because larvicides can be harmful.

And the best part? Mosquito dunks last two to three months, so you’ll only need to remember to use them once a season.

6. Mosquito Magnet

While they might seem a little far-fetched, mosquito magnets also work to kill mosquitoes.

Mosquito magnets fall under the category of mosquito traps. These devices work by releasing a steady stream of moisture, heat, and carbon dioxide. The human body naturally puts off these three elements, so mosquitos are extremely attracted to this combination.

Once attracted, the device sucks up the mosquitos and traps them inside a net in the device. The mosquitos then remain there until they become dehydrated and die. The whole process takes around 24 hours, but once the device is up and running, it’ll make a big difference.

7. Professional Pest Control

Sometimes, the best way to kill mosquitoes is to call in the professionals.

Professional mosquito pest control starts with an on-site survey of your yard and home. The experts will then develop a treatment plan to not only kill all existing mosquitoes but also prevent mosquitoes from returning.

To get rid of the mosquitoes, professionals may use chemical treatments. They may also recommend physical changes to your landscaping, such as the elimination of water sources.

Beyond Ways to Kill Mosquitoes

While you won’t need all of these ways to kill mosquitoes, choose a few to get the job done.

We suggest starting out with control sprays and larvicides. If you still experience trouble, purchase mosquito zappers, dunks, or magnets. And if all else fails, you can call in the help of birds and bats or the professionals to get the job done.
