Six Family Activity Ideas for Rainy Days

Ah, rain. Every parent’s sworn arch-nemesis. Whether it’s a weekend or the school holiday season, it can be difficult enough for parents to find ways to entertain their children, without having to battle the miserable weather as well. One day indoors is normally manageable, as children tend to find ways to entertain themselves: from browsing the internet to playing with their favorite toys in their rooms. However, after a few days of being stuck indoors, it won’t be long before the children start to become restless and irritable. Frustrated sighs will soon become cries of “I’m bored!”, which will eventually turn into small tantrums as everyone becomes aggravated at having been cooped up in the house for so long.

Children need mental stimulation and opportunities to for physical exertion, and it can be difficult for parents to come up with different ideas to keep them occupied and content. However, don’t fret: see the rain as an opportunity to bring the whole family together in one space, instead of perceiving it as nothing more than an inconvenience. Rather than sticking the children in front of the TV, or leaving them to their own devices, try to find ways to get everyone to participate in activities as a household. If you are struggling with ideas to keep your children happy on rainy days, then here are a few different activities that the whole family can participate in while staying safe and dry indoors.

Create a Scrapbook

Scrapbooking is a great activity for the whole family to participate in. Everyone can pick out their favorite photos and keepsakes to go in the book, and this is a fun way to reminisce about all the times that you weren’t stuck indoors, and relive some memories! Why not get the children to create handmade decorations, and draw their own pictures to give the book a really personal touch? Scrapbooks are also something that you can continue to add to, so you can use them as a continuous project, which can be brought out every time you are faced with some bad weather.

Camping Indoors

Seeing as the outdoors has become a no-go zone, why not bring the adventure inside? Come up with a ‘campsite’ name with your kids, and they can draw and decorate a sign to display at the entrance to your camping grounds. the living room door! Create a fake campfire out of paper, and set up tents around it, or build your own forts out of sheets and pillows! Recreate campfire foods easily by rustling up some hotdogs and heating some s’mores in the oven. Top off the experience with some recreational activities, campfire songs and maybe even tell some spooky stories, and then let the kids sleep in their tents overnight. Who said the indoors couldn’t be fun too?

Indoor Film Festival

An obvious choice for something to do on a rainy day might be to take the children to the cinema. However, paying for the whole family to go and watch a film can be expensive, and the experience will only last a few hours. Alternatively, another more exciting option could be to host your very own indoor film festival! Come up with a movie theme, and let every family member choose a film that fits in with that theme. Set out some cinema snacks, including popcorn, of course, draw the curtains to create the perfect atmosphere, and sit down together as a family for a movie marathon.

Talent Show

Children love to be given the opportunity to express themselves, and a family talent show is a great way to let them do just that! Set up an area of the house to act as a stage, and get the children to spend the day practicing their chosen talent (this will keep them occupied for at least a few hours). Then, set a time for the curtain to go up, and the show can begin! Each family member can take it in turns to perform their act, and this activity will also have the added benefit teaching them important communication skills. For added incentive you could even come up with some prizes, such as purchasing some cheap medals, and give them out at the end: this is bound to put a smile on your children’s faces.

Escape Rooms

Escape Games provide great indoor entertainment for families with older children. These escape rooms consist of role-playing activities where a group of participants have to work together to solve puzzles and reveal clues in order to figure out the way to escape a locked room or unravel an unsolved mystery. This is a great novelty activity to participate in and will get the whole family working together as a team. The make-believe role-playing will also allow everyone to use their creativity and imagination. There are a whole host of different situations you can choose from, up to 8 people can participate, and there are no set age limits, so there is nothing to stop the whole family from joining in.

Painting Session

Transform a gloomy day indoors into a colorful adventure with a family paint-by-numbers session. This activity is perfect for all ages, providing a structured way to create art while leaving room for individual creativity. Each family member can choose their paint-by-numbers kit, which comes in various themes and difficulty levels to suit everyone’s interests and skill sets. Fun and Educational Trips

Not every trip out of the house has to involve being outdoors. There are lots of places you can visit as a family which will allow you to keep dry, and have the added bonus of being educational too! Check out your local museums to improve your children’s interest in history, art, and science. Alternatively, you could take them to the aquarium and let them learn all about sea life and the underwater ecosystem. You could even take them to the theatre and let them experience different cultures in the form of the performing arts; pantomimes provide a particularly fun and interactive show for children to visit. Don’t feel limited to conventional activities, or feel like your children would be bored by something educational because the day will be as fun as you make it!
