Lunch Ideas for the Picky Eater
Being a mom of a teenage girl is challenging enough. Have you ever tried to get a teenage girl to eat properly without them worrying about how many calories each product holds? This task becomes even more challenging when your teen has to take medication for a disorder. Because of Gracie’s (my youngest) Epilepsy she has to take a strong dosage of medicine to prevent seizures.
Sound simple enough right? But one of the side effects of the meds is that she has no appetite. But she has found that if she doesn’t eat either right before or right after she takes her medicine she starts to feel sick. But what do you feed a teen who has not appetite?
If you are like me you probably have found it challenging trying to find things for your child to eat. I have searched for things that she will not only find appetizing but that she will also actually eat. That is hard enough as she was a picky eater before the meds but she is even picker now. I have spent hours pouring over Pinterest boards trying to find meals especially lunches that she will eat. In doing so I have found out a few things.
Simple is best. Sometimes those fancy meals are just that too fancy for her taste. I have found that when she does want to eat she would rather just have a pb&j sandwich and some fruit. A bowl of cereal works as well sometimes.
It doesn’t hurt to treat her once in a while with a meal from her favorite restaurant. Mind you I don’t do that all the time but every once in a while it is a real treat for her.
I have also found that I can’t go wrong when I pick up a few lunchables for her to bring to school or even to have as snacks when she is at home. She loves it when I mix her lunch time meal with 100% juice. There are some many different varieties of lunchables that I know she will never get tired of them. Plus they now come with 100% Juice so they are even better for her. I love that I know that I can have her pick out a few lunchables for school each week and she will not only have a nutritious meal but also a meal that contains 100% juice.
In this journey I have found one important factor that stands out above all of these points and that is having food accessible for those times when she does want to eat something is the key.
So tell me how do you feed your picky eater?
