I have sat at my computer the last few days looking at pictures from all of my friends that live where this horrible winter storm has hit. I would love to see some snow every once in a while but not like what they get. Living in North Carolina, we hardly ever have to worry about the snow but we do have to worry about bad storms and hurricanes. That got me thinking about what needs to be in hand in case of emergency. Here are a few things that you need to grab and store for those emergencies. Some have to be a last-minute item to grab but others you can put up know. I suggest getting some plastic totes and make a few of these up.

  1. Nonperishable foods – These can be canned meats, canned fruits and vegetables, hot and cold cereal and any food that is high in energy.
  2. Fun foods- This will help keeping the kids corralled. This can include gelatin, puddings, fruit snacks, or cheese or peanut butter crackers.
  3. Water- 1 gallon per person per day.
  4. Vitamins and Medications- This would be one of those last-minute items.
  5. Disposable plates, utensils and paper towels. Because let’s face it you can’t wash dishes if your power is out.
  6. Fleece Blankets. In fact any kind of blankets would work. Also you might want to add zip up pjs, scarves, hats and gloves.
  7. Hand crank flashlights and candles.
  8. A Whistle to signal for help.
  9. Matches in a waterproof container.
  10. A First Aid Kit
  11. If you have a gas grill, an extra propane tank is always great to have on hand.

So these are the items that I am gathering for my emergency kits. What items are you placing in yours?
