How to Plan a Babysitter-Friendly Night Out in a Big City

Well, honestly, parents don’t get to go out that often, and that’s just the reality. Like, what little date nights they gets it’s usually inside the home anyway, maybe after the kids are asleep or something like that. Plus, nights out become these rare little windows where it finally feels possible to dress like a person again, talk in full sentences, and remember what it’s like to be out in the world after 7 p.m.

So when the babysitter is booked, it can feel like, this has to be amazing, this has to count, this has to be the night. But that mindset is also risky, because trying to “make the most of it” can turn into overdoing it, staying out too late, spending too much, or waking up the next day feeling like parenting is now a punishment. So, you need to be realistic, you need to have fun, basically, you need to have that sweet spot.

Start Earlier than You Think

Well, if you can at least, then it’d be a really good idea to just do all of that. But really, the biggest babysitter mistake is starting too late, because then everything feels like it’s happening in fast-forward. No, really, just think about it for just a second; dinner is rushed, the first venue is crowded, and it’s already almost time to head back. You don’t want that; there’s no relaxing when it comes to any of that either. So, just starting earlier fixes that, and it also makes the night feel calmer, because there’s time to enjoy it without constantly checking the clock.

Plus, an early reservation is the move, especially on weekends. Like, you could consider having dinner at a normal hour, not the trendy late seating, because the whole point is enjoying the city without sacrificing sleep or just risking low energy levels the next day, either.

Choose a Format that Doesn’t Require Going Hard

What does this even mean? Well, it means the night out format should ideally be effortless, considering what little time you have. A babysitter’s night out isn’t the time for a plan that depends on standing in lines or waiting for a club to “get good” at midnight. Plus, that babysitter has a life too, and you shouldn’t overstep any boundaries either.

So, the best format is something that has structure built in, because structure saves time and removes decision fatigue. For example, it could be a good idea to have dinner at a lounge, comedy clubs sometimes offer meals if you’re planning to watch standup, and a cocktail bar with reservations is a nice idea. But really, even a nightclub can work if it’s more of a seated show experience than a packed dance floor situation, because it gives entertainment, a table, and a predictable timeline, which is honestly what makes the whole night feel doable.

Be Careful with the Drinks

While this one is clearly obvious, you don’t really see it until hindsight kicks in. So, the morning doesn’t care that it was a fun night. The morning is still going to show up early, well, very early, and very loud too. Your fun tonight absolutely should not sabotage tomorrow! Just pace yourself and again, be really careful!
